127 – Conviction

This episode, we’re looking at 2010′s Conviction starring Hilary Swank as Betty Anne Waters, a real life Massachusetts woman who earned a law degree to fight for the innocense of her brother wrongly convicted of murder. With a cast that includes Minnie Driver, Peter Gallagher, and Sam Rockwell as Betty’s jailed brother Kenny, the film received a middling festival reaction and fizzled at the box office before getting buried among Fox Searchlight’s bigger contenders. Though Swank and Rockwell respectively earned SAG and Critics Choice nominations, the film disappeared quickly.

Perhaps Conviction’s biggest stamp on Oscar culture was Swank’s appearance in that year’s formative Hollywood Reporter Actress roundtable. This episode, we unpack what makes that year’s roundtable a high bar for actress obsessives and go deep on the history of the THR Actress Roundtable. We also get into Rockwell’s unfortunate recent typecasting and the brief and impressive performances by Juliette Lewis and Clea Duvall in the film.

103 – Natural Born Killers

This week, we’re going back to the mid-90s to visit Oliver Stone’s highly controversial skewering of the muckraking, blood-thirsty media landscape. Natural Born Killers arrived in late summer 1994 and immediately started a firestorm of outraged Republicans and a number of copycat killings. While an audacious and uncompromising satire, the violence of its central Mickey and Mallory paired with the bombast of Stone’s vision proved to be too daring for the Academy that previously couldn’t resist the filmmaker.

But the film also debuted in the year of Pulp Fiction, and inspired a major grudge toward Stone from original Killers screenwriter Quentin Tarantino. This episode, we praise the performances of stars Juliette Lewis and Woody Harrelson, and look at supporting player Robert Downey Jr.’s much-storied addiction issues during the decade.

064 – The Evening Star

Is there a faster fast track to Oscar buzz than being a sequel to a Best Picture winner? While there may not be much of a sample pool beyond The Godfather series, 1996 gave us The Evening Star, a follow-up to Terms of Endearment and Shirley MacLaine’s Aurora Greenway. This time without writer/director James L. Brooks (replaced here by Steel Magnolias scribe Robert Harling making his directorial debut), the Academy did not give this proverbial daughter a shot.

This week, we spread the film’s ashes from a speeding beach convertible as we discuss the ways the film disappoints in the shadow of Terms of Endearment, but still has its own charms. And no, we don’t just mean Scott Wolf in his tighty whities.

We also look back at MacLaine’s legendary career (including her all-timer Oscar speech), spitballs who might be the eponymous dames of the eventual Tea With The Dames 2, and go deep on the very personality heavy 1996 Golden Globes lineup of nominees.
