Good Morning Benders and Non-Benders alike – SKKKKRRRTT! – Hello free non-benders of Republic City. Welcome to The Republic City Dispatch, a revolutionary radio programme covering Nickelodeon’s Legend of Korra series. This week on “The Aftermath,” Too long have the weak willed metal-benders under Chief Beifong held down the bending population. Too long have we falsely placed our hope in The Avatar. We promise you a new world, and Equal world, where even the most vicious benders can be met in combat by our technology. And now, the voices of the revolution, Matt, Da7e and Devindra!

Hosted by Devindra Hardawar of the /Filmcast and Da7e and Matt Patches of Operation Kino.

Does someone owe Asami an apology? I think so. ;)

Actually, that’s not going to happen. Not yet anyway. : ). New episode rendering now.

How do you like our new look?

Do you see we have a comments section now on each post?

Is it too ballsy to call ourselves #1?

From listener darine_smith:

Just a quick heads-up, on your recent podcast for Republic City Dispatch you guys mentioned that Asami Sato looks a lot like Lust from FMA. If you go to Bryan Konietzko’s Tumblr he have a quick sketch of Lust along with an explanation that he created Asami like that character. Plus Emily, as soon as Bryan mentioned that he channeled those two female characters together, I immediately didn’t trust her BEFORE the show even started haha (EVILLLLL!) Thank you guys for the podcast, and please keep up the great work!

bryankonietzko:

Just a quick study I did a few months back of Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

EDIT: Man, some of these notes are cracking me up. The way people run with ideas and speculation! Yes, many of us on the crew enjoy Fullmetal (especially Joaquim, who has praised its virtues for some time), but Mike and I were late to the party. We didn’t start watching it until well after we created Mako and Bolin. And I think I had already designed Asami before then as well, but as Lust is such a killer design, I’m fine with saying she was influenced by her, and flattered anyone would think so. And why would people think we don’t like anime? I am amused!

Hello, I’m a fairly recent follow and listener so I’m not sure if this has been addressed yet or not, but do we know anything about Zuko’s daughter, the current firelord, or who Zuko’s wife is? I’m hoping once he shows up in the show we may know what happened to his mother, I’m still yelling/laughing at the writers for that little joke in the first episode about Zuko’s mom.

We do not know anything about Zuko’s daughter in-show, just that she exists from the Nick.com game.

Apparently his daughter IS the current Fire Lord, which makes me wonder if she’s the female member of the Council (the only female on the Council reps the Fire Nation, but please nicely tell me if we know that character’s name).

That council member is also voiced by the same voice actress who does Beifong (Mindy Sterling), so it seems unlikely she’d play a major part, but you never know. Not to mention there might still be a Fire Lord and an Earth King and leaders for the Northern and Southern Water Tribes that are NOT on the Council. We haven’t seen or heard about how Council members get their appointments.

As for Zuko showing up, that will happen in “Skeleton In The Closet” and I have a feeling all our questions will be answered:

-Da7e-

Is Janet Varney gonna be on the podcast at some point? I noticed y’all’s conversation with her on twitter and it sounded very probable that she would be on it. So, is she?

I’m not going to answer this question, but I will say this:

IF we have a BYE WEEK next weekend (for you non-sports minded people, that means a week without a new episode, which looks possible knowing what we know about the schedule), there will be a podcast regardless.

If that podcast has a guest or if that podcast will see Matt, Devindra and I discussing some of our most e-mailed/tumblr’d/tweeted fan theories I will not announce through prompt, I will announce when we know exactly what it will be.

: )

I know that’s frustrating, but we’re doing our best over here to not promise anything until we know we can deliver it.

Until then, enjoy this Korra fashion design by princeruii.deviantart.com:

If Tarrlok is the ally Korra suspect that is working for the Equalists in the next episode. Why would we work with them besides for increase in power?

tracywilliams.deviantart.com

I don’t think Tarrlock gets revealed tomorrow. I think Tarrlock is revealed as evil by his character design.

BUT – What? Power isn’t enough of a motivation? It has been for all other villains ever.

-Da7e-

I know the korraverse is just looking for reasons to pin the Satos as villains but I was wondering if anyone considered this: Could it have been on purpose that Asami and her father decided to sponsor the fire ferrets as a way to get information on what is happening with Korra and the council. I found it interesting that Amon knew straight away that the pro-bending match had not been cancelled before anyone else did and I was speculating that the Sato’s could be a source of information.

I think Tarrlock was the source of THAT information.

The Satos were at Tarrlock’s little high society get together, so I don’t think they have problems knowing what the council is up to. Heck, The Fire Ferrets stormed into the Council unannounced and the council itself is in this huge building, so I’m guessing there are public sessions but I digress…

I don’t doubt that there’s a good chance the Satos aren’t 100% bad, but I’m still amazed how far people are willing to look past what we’ve learned about them in the show to make up a way for them to be sympathetic villains.

I think we’re going to get a sympathetic reversal on Amon, not the Satos. The Satos and Tarrlocks of the world are the 1% of this universe, folks. Let’s not make them good people until they’re able to give chairty without first hitting you in the face with bluntness (“I hear you’re dirt poor”) or with a moped.

-Da7e-

About Korra’s flashbacks. A theory I had was that maybe since Korra is having a hard time connecting to the spiritual side of being an Avatar then maybe Aang is trying to “meet her half way” and try to help her the way Roku helped him. Maybe he’s forcing her to see those memories in order to help her stop Amon the crisis in Republic city.

It seems to happen only when she gets knocked out in battle and NEVER HAPPENED before Amon knocked her out by hitting her Chi point on her forehead.

I’m still of the opinion that Amon is trying to force her into the Avatar State and what we’re seeing might be what Aang did to bury the Avatar State deep within Korra.

I think Aang did something horrible and changed what it means to be The Avatar. Perhaps we’re already State-less and that’s going to surprise Amon as much as it surprises Korra.

We have no evidence Korra has ever accessed the Spirit World. EVER, so I don’t think she’s in contact with Aang at all at this point.

Oh Aang, you always change EVERYTHING.

… even The Simpsons:

-Da7e-

Hey I was thinking about what you said about Korra dying and Pema giving birth to the new avatar. Would that work since the next avatar will be a earth bender?

When did I say Pema would give birth to the new Avatar? : )

If Korra dies, I think Pema would give birth to a new Korra, not a new Avatar. First because I’m not entirely convinced Korra is the Avatar (out of respect for Matt Patches) and Second because I think Amon’s plan is to kill Korra in the Avatar State, thus ending all Avatars. It just makes sense if you really want to discourage benders as you invade their world.

But now I’m layering theories I have no proof of over more theories that are likely baseless.

All in good fun, fandom, please don’t hurt me.

-Da7e-

Bryke writing is more complex than regular “kids shows”. So the Satos’ sudden intro, influence, & so-far limited personality isn’t taken at face value. But I don’t think Asami’s simply a beautiful double-crosser. A:TLA gave a wide range of realistically multi-dimensional characters; no one’s completely good or evil. Maybe the Satos are coerced into working w/ Amon, like Tylee or Mechanic, or indoctrinated by Amon, misguided like Zuko or Jet. I think they’re the redeemable baddie-turned-good.

I actually think it would make more sense that Tarrlock and Sato are using Amon and Amon is the one who switches sides at the end of this season. Just because I get the distinct feel that the real disgusting stuff going on in Republic City is happening in the council and with the battle between Cabbage Corp and Future Industries for the title of RC’s biggest technology provider.

I don’t know where all this pro-Sato stuff is coming from, there’s nothing about that family that isn’t slimey. Sorry Massamis.

And this Saturday’s episode includes Korra discovering a turncoat in her inner circle. So says BOLIN HIMSELF.

We don’t want Mako, Bolin or Tenzin’s family to be bad, so – Really, how is this not Asami?

: )

-Da7e-

RESPONSE from tetsu-girl:

Thanks! Follow-up: Please don’t assume I’m a Masami shipper; I agree that Asami’s probably the Equalist. I like your idea that the real villainy’s in the political/corporate world, but I think they’re Long Fengs, while Amon’s the socio-politcal radical (Ozai) of LoK. It’s not pro-Sato; they’re suspicous, not just good OR bad. There’s room for redemption, to see the error of their ways, like all the A:TLA characters I mentioned. Sorry, that’s just what I think makes more sense, in story & theme.

Response from Da7e:

Oh, I am not assuming anyone is shipping anything. I apologize if it came off that way. Any time I’ve tried to engage shippers I piss people off, regardless if it’s attempting to troll them myself or just trying to acknowledge they exit.

Another question, could Tenzin himself be a potential target of Amon in the future? As the only airbending master around, he is extremely valuable to Korra and her development as the avatar. Not only that, but he is also a council member and the son of the previous avatar. If Amon were to go after him, it could be a decisive blow to Korra and the city. Something bad happening to Tenzin might also trigger the avatar state in Korra, which could further be part of Amon’s plan. Is this likely?

And from reader Feanor:

How involved do you think the children of Tenzin will play in the series?  The obviously have a secondary role but does that also mean that they may be targeted by Amon; going back to what he said to Korra.

It’s more likely that Tenzin is a target than Tenzin’s kids. First, because he’s a council member and seemingly the most-trained Air Nomad in the bending arts, second because he’s so close to Korra.

HOWEVER, I still think the way Tenzin has been used thus far that he’s our portal to what happened with the Gaang after A:TLA.

The only thing that worries me about Tenzin is what we know about the episode “Skeletons In The Closet” which, I’d guess, is the episode we find out what happened in all these flashbacks. That’s also the episode Dante (voice of Zuko) is on, so I’d think we’d get it from Zuko. BUT, I can’t think of a reason Korra would seek out old scarface while Lin and Tenzin are around.

So that has me concerned.

When we were young By: charmful

If you were a bender, which element would you want to bend the most?

This is Da7e and Da7e says EARTH.

It’s my personality type and earth bending is awesome.

Oh, hey, and that’s what I look like.

After looking back at some of ATLA, I noticed something about Amon’s mask. It looks like a variation of the Painted Lady’s face design. Except instead of the Crescent moon, Amon has a Sun. I don’t know exactly what this could mean, or if it means anything at all, but I’m feeling that Amon is really connected to the spirits, right down to the design of his mask.

You can’t see me, but I’m putting my finger on my nose.

The Painted Lady mask was also based on Japanese Noh mask designs, so it could also just be a cool design echo, or Amon could be purposefully trying to send a spiritual message to his followers.

We haven’t heard that much in recent episodes about Amon and the Spirit World, but we’re not out of that realm quite yet.

After episode 1, we were told to get a female perspective and now we’re hot off one of our best episodes with Emily from the AV Club.

Now it appears you would like to hear Korra talking about being Korra. So would we!

Thanks for poking us, we’re working on it.

UNTIL THEN – here’s my favorite Janet Varney stuff from recent weeks:

First, check out her Nerdist Podcast JV Club

THIS is her with the always wonderful Alison Rosen

She talks RiffTrax (and a bit of Korra) on the Spill.com podcast

and, comparing Naga to her dog (Scott) at the end of this interview, which is great.

All this and more from JanetVarney.com

If you like Korra, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the other awesome things Janet does. It’s hard to eat dinner and watch TBS without missing her.

This is some amazing Asami cosplay from Electric Lady. Maybe we should find her last week’s commited Mako eyebrow cosplayer?

I will miss you, Pro Bending arena. But I also look forward to saying things like: “Back in my day, the WolfBats could still bend!”

Bending Arena – now thats some fancy schmancy architecture 🙂

I’m really enjoying the different interpretations of Korra’s facial structure. Just sayin’.

kyaptan:

I /REALLY/ needed a break from that other pic I’m working on

The avatar state is a defense mechanism, designed to empower you with the skills and knowledge of all the past Avatars. The glow is the combination of all your past lives, focusing their energy through your body. In the Avatar State, you are at your most powerful… but also at your most vulnerable. If you are killed in the Avatar State, the reincarnation cycle will be broken, and the Avatar will cease to exist.
