299 – The Matrix Resurrections

This week’s film has Joe and Chris on opposite sides of a divisive reception. The Matrix not only revolutionized genre filmmaking in 1999, but it resulted in a resounding Oscar success. Reception to its first two sequels in 2003 was decidedly unappreciative, but the franchise has received some critical reassessment in the two decades since. Enter 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections, a COVID-delayed and incredibly meta revisiting of The Wachowski’s science fiction world, this time with only Lana Wachowski at the helm. The last of Warner Bros.’ films to be released simultaneously in theaters and online during the pandemic, Resurrections nearly cracked craft categories, but its timing proved unfortunate.

This episode, we talk about Oscars relationship to awarding franchises and overlooking later installments. We also talk about our opposing points of view on the film, how the film incorporates new cast members as stand-ins for the original lineup, and the film’s bold meta elements.

111 – Much Ado About Nothing

We’re tackling our first Shakespeare adaptation this week with Kenneth Branagh’s Much Ado About Nothing. After launching immediately into Oscar’s good graces with his directorial debut Henry V, Branagh returned to the Bard with this lighter and more star-studded adaptation – but couldn’t match that previous film’s favor. With a cast featuring Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves, and Michael Keaton, this film instead remains as a delightful and sexy good time.

This week, we look at Branagh’s long and category spanning history with Oscar and his evolution towards a studio director of franchise films. We also dive into his affair with Helena Bonham Carter, Emma Thompson’s double nominations in 1993, and the 1993 Golden Globe Musical/Comedy nominees.

Topics also include the recent film history of Shakespeare adaptations, Thompson’s “reveal” on the Ellen sitcom, and Imelda Staunton as beer wench.

037 – The Gift

Before Sam Raimi went into the Spider-Verse, he tipped a toe into prestige waters with A Simple Plan before misfiring with The Gift. The 2000 film starred Cate Blanchett as southern clairvoyant helping solving the murder of a local woman (played by an off-type Katie Holmes) and also her damaged friends Hilary Swank and Giovanni Ribisi. This was thought of as a potential nomination for Blanchett and post-Sling Blade cash-in for screenwriter Billy Bob Thornton, but ultimately was too middling to register in a year of dominating lead actress performances.

This week we look at the post-Elizabeth (but pre-Aviator) Cate Blanchett fog of indistinguishable titles that failed to return her to the Oscar stage, and also the warring factions of actress stans on Oscar message boards. We also consider  Ribisi as “Ben Foster with words”, the internet’s pervy Mr. Skin days, and the 4/5 brilliance of the 2000 Best Actress lineup.
