359 – The Last Thing He Wanted

Pair the rising star director Dee Rees with a Joan Didion adaptation and the Oscar-winning Anne Hathaway and you have the kind of on-paper buzz we love talking about here on THOB. But The Last Thing He Wanted, following Hathaway as a journalist whose wayward father mires her in South American arms conflict, ended up being anything but a success. Anticipated heavily on the 2019 fall festival circuit, Netflix ultimately quietly premiered the film at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and dumped it shortly after.

This episode, we talk about the film’s narrative issues and how its timely exactly pre-COVID and Netflix’s 2020 lineup allowed the film to be quickly forgotten. We also talk about Hathaway as a steadfast committed performer, Rees’ ascendancy with Mudbound and Pariah, and both Willem Dafoe and Toby Jones enter our Six Timers.

Reunited at TIFF!

It’s an annual tradition! Joe and Chris (reunited for the first time in years!) are reporting on the films of the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, including this year’s (Not Grolsch) People’s Choice Award winner: Steven Spielberg’s The Fablemans. And we’ve got bets against each other gaining some heat! This episode, we unpack our feelings about some of the festival’s biggest titles including Glass Onion, Women Talking, The Woman King, The Banshees of Inisherin, and The Inspection. 040 – Love and Other Drugs (with Nate Jones)

Can you believe that in 2010 we got Oscar buzz for a film about the rise of Viagara in the 90s that was also a sexy romance and was also about Parkinson’s AND was directed by your dad’s favorite director of macho war epics? It came true – we’re finally talking about Love and Other Drugs! Reuniting Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway after both had earned their first Oscar nominations, this film was sold on its frank depiction of sex but largely reviled for the many disjointed pieces.

This week, we have Vulture senior writer Nate Jones joining us as our tiebreaker to Joe’s hate for the film and Chris’ apologetic affection for it. We take a look back at the notorious (and misunderstood) Oscar hosting gig for Hathaway that year and Gyllenhaal’s pivot from charismatic leading man to weirdo.
