Yes. Yes, ATLA-Annotated, I love your nerdgasm worthy posts.

atla-annotated:

The Imperial Roofs of the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom

Both, the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom have golden- red roofs. They follow the Chinese architectural feature of yellow roof tiles/roofs indicating an imperial building.

Note how both, Caldera and Upper Ring in Ba Sing Se have yellow/red roofs, and the Lower and Middle Ring do not. While all buildings in the Fire Nation seem to be Ozai’s buildings (but for the Painted Lady village, they have thatched roofs.)

As I have mentioned before, the flame ornaments and steeply upturned roofs, especially of the Caldera and Ember Island, resemble traditional Thai architecture (compare the Royal Palace in Bankok).

Please also compare the Royal Palace in Tokyo, which does not feature yellow or red roofs.

From listener darine_smith:

Just a quick heads-up, on your recent podcast for Republic City Dispatch you guys mentioned that Asami Sato looks a lot like Lust from FMA. If you go to Bryan Konietzko’s Tumblr he have a quick sketch of Lust along with an explanation that he created Asami like that character. Plus Emily, as soon as Bryan mentioned that he channeled those two female characters together, I immediately didn’t trust her BEFORE the show even started haha (EVILLLLL!) Thank you guys for the podcast, and please keep up the great work!

bryankonietzko:

Just a quick study I did a few months back of Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

EDIT: Man, some of these notes are cracking me up. The way people run with ideas and speculation! Yes, many of us on the crew enjoy Fullmetal (especially Joaquim, who has praised its virtues for some time), but Mike and I were late to the party. We didn’t start watching it until well after we created Mako and Bolin. And I think I had already designed Asami before then as well, but as Lust is such a killer design, I’m fine with saying she was influenced by her, and flattered anyone would think so. And why would people think we don’t like anime? I am amused!

After episode 1, we were told to get a female perspective and now we’re hot off one of our best episodes with Emily from the AV Club.

Now it appears you would like to hear Korra talking about being Korra. So would we!

Thanks for poking us, we’re working on it.

UNTIL THEN – here’s my favorite Janet Varney stuff from recent weeks:

First, check out her Nerdist Podcast JV Club

THIS is her with the always wonderful Alison Rosen

She talks RiffTrax (and a bit of Korra) on the Spill.com podcast

and, comparing Naga to her dog (Scott) at the end of this interview, which is great.

All this and more from JanetVarney.com

If you like Korra, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the other awesome things Janet does. It’s hard to eat dinner and watch TBS without missing her.

I’m really enjoying the different interpretations of Korra’s facial structure. Just sayin’.

The avatar state is a defense mechanism, designed to empower you with the skills and knowledge of all the past Avatars. The glow is the combination of all your past lives, focusing their energy through your body. In the Avatar State, you are at your most powerful… but also at your most vulnerable. If you are killed in the Avatar State, the reincarnation cycle will be broken, and the Avatar will cease to exist.

Isn’t that strange that we haven’t any trailer about the 6th episode in legend of korra?

(via nickelodeon-shows-videos)

Not particularly. Footage from this episode is out there as part of the season-long tease and “And The Winner Is…” is almost a part two of “The Spirit of Competition” or it is potentially.

Also, it’s Tuesday, I imagine we’ll get clips Thursday.

Fat Pabu forever.

I couldn’t find a link to the original artist, but  Here is the original post! fully anthropomorphized Pabu and Naga are pretty sweet.

flamablebread: LoK: Minimalist Posters.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I was thinking of this while I was driving to work. At some point in the original A:TLA series Toph says she learned earthbending from the badgermoles and that other benders learned their bending from the original source. Does the series ever explain how it became genetic? Or were probably already born with an inclination towards bending?
adventuresofatwentysomething

DA7E SAYS: I have no idea how it became genetic, but it appears to have some sort of genetic trait. We haven’t seen a bending art be born to a family that has never had that bending art in it’s past before.

The avatar wiki states that “Airbenders continually sought for spiritual enlightenment, and, as a result, all children born into the Air Nomads were benders.” This makes me think it’s possible for the Air Acolytes to eventually give birth to air benders. But can an isolated group of non benders from different nations learn bending over generations? Is bending a specific gene that applies to specific continents?
dizzykins

DA7E SAYS: Mentioned above, bending was initially taught to humans (Water uses Moon, Air uses Bison, Fire dragons, Earth moles) and at some point became at least partially genetic. I think in the Mako/Bolin case, we’re looking at a family that was one of the original Earth Kingdom/Fire Kingdom mixed famalies from the post-Aang era.

do you think Amon could be Bolin and Mako’s brother? he stated his father was killed by a fire bender, and the brothers’ parents were killed by a firebender, what do you think?
Anonymous

DA7E SAYS: I dont think Mako and Bolin grew up on a farm and the boy’s parents were attacked and killed by a Firebender while it sounds like Amon’s story (if it’s true) had some sort of social/classist thing going on. I think it’s unlikely, but we haven’t seen a single thing in the series that could prove you wrong.

So looking at the Avatar Wiki for Chakras (google!) It seems the “each episode is a way to get through a chakra” is becoming more of a likely theory. The Earth chakra is first, and deals with survival but is blocked by fear. Korra had to overcome her fear in the fourth episode. The Water chakra is next, and deals with pleasure but is blocked by guilt.
Korra wanted to be with the person she liked, but she never wanted to hurt anyone – by the end of the episode she had overcome her guilt by realizing emotions take a while to sort out. The next chakra is the Fire chakra, which deals with willpower and is blocked by shame. What could Korra be facing that has to do with Willpower and Shame?
thebadmamajama

DA7E SAYS: I’m not sure about willpower, but if I’ve learned anything from Batman, you can’t let the Joker run around Gotham City while you’e out gallivanting with Selina Kyle. In other words – Korra just took about a week off from Tarrlock’s Task Force. Not that the Task Force is super-great for Korra personally, but she’s been letting the Equalists re-gain their footing and now they’re going to come back with a vengeance. Willpower wise – maybe Korra is going to need to let someone’s bending get sacrificed to protect a greater number of people? That’s just me guessing.

Sometimes, the Tumblr dashboard is it’s own commentary.

BE FOREWARNED – Discussion includes Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Promise (Part One), Nick.com’s “Welcome To Republic City” and Chapters 1-5 of The Legend of Korra.

Good Morning Benders and Non-Benders alike and welcome back to the Republic City Dispatch, a radio programme covering Nickelodeon’s Legend of Korra series. Expect Delays! But take this prompt!

(art by okelleok)

News, RCD Fans: news. It’s neither good nor bad, just is.

This week’s podcast will not drop until SUNDAY due to some scheduling conflicts.

But fear not, we will not abandon you this eve of the ‘shipping-est episode of Korra yet.

So – give us your opinions on this prompt and Da7e will jump in tomorrow (Saturday) in between Korra’s airing and the podcast going up:

The Legend of Korra is going to take a hard turn into relationships, which is much more fitting knowing this series is about Korra’s teenage years and her coming of age. The Avatar: The Last Airbender romance was scare and slow boiling, so how much did the creators (Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko) PLAN on driving ‘shipping fandom crazy with these characters? Keep in mind the nature of animated television means this season was finished before the fans even knew what a Makorra or Masami was.

You can contact us by going to our ask page or e-mailing us.

Good? Good. See you tomorrow and we’ll get all deep into Episode 5 “The Spirit of Competition” on Sunday.

I don’t think I was the only one who stared at Nick.com’s “Welcome to Republic City” being: “Wait. What? Where’s my police station and Toph statue?”

So, instead of waiting around, we’re going to take it in a separate and *possibly spoilerish* (though this is all theory until it happens).

Tumblr user masterarrowhead claims to know some plot points of Korra Book 2. We’re not 100% sold on this, but it’s an interesting theory that comes with it’s own visuals.

BE AWARE: If this guy/girl/person/Fire Ferret is right, he’s/she’s/it’s about to spoil some stuff from Korra Book One. But we don’t know if he’s/she’s/it’s right.

Right now: THIS IS THEORY NOT CANON (I mean, Howl as a character?) THEORY! THEORY! NOT CANON! BUT FUN THEORY BASED ON REAL PHOTOS.

Take it away, masterarrowhead!

-Da7e-

Hey guys!

Remember this post that Bryan posted on Tumblr back in March?

It includes a storyboard of Korra and Mako.

…Or so some of us assumed.

Let’s take a closer look then shall we?

I remember seeing this for the first time and being all “That kind of looks like Bolin except he’s looking a bit too lanky and his arms much too thin.”

But taking a closer look at it now?

Check out that expression. That is definitely more of a Bolin expression than Mako expression. Although that boy does tend to surprise people with the expressions he has in store haha. So the expression can’t really be that valid of a point.

But then look again.

There’s that turtleduck butt hair in the back.

However the front still looks more like Mako’s— WAIT!

Let’s pull up some comparisons.

Wait a minute.

Mako has a baby turtleduck butt too.

But the one in the picture is bigger than his.

And yet the front of the hair….

There can only be one explanation.

I remember my friend Ash who used to work as a developer on The Legend of Korra as a  script writer telling me about a brain storm session the team had about Book 2. It was just a small tossing around of ideas because they were still hard at work for Book 1 and I didn’t actually think they’d go through with the idea.

But this right here.

This seemingly insignificant storyboard holds the key to the plot of Book 2.

Don’t read any further if you don’t want to be spoiled.

..

.

Okay. Book 2 was discussed to be more about Korra’s journey with discovering more of the spiritual side of being the Avatar including more journeys to the Spirit World.

What the real twist to the story is that the Spirit named Koh has a secret ability that was never revealed in the original series.

The ability to combine two souls, people as well.

Korra has to reenter the Spirit World and find the fractures of Bolin and Mako’s souls  that weren’t part of them being combined, in order to make them into their own beings  once again.

It all makes so much sense now with Janet Varney’s seemingly innocent tweet about Mako and Bolin combined would be the perfect man.

She knows.

And if my suspicions are correct then this means that the Asami sub-plot will also come into play. Yes. There’s also a sub-plot about finding Asami in the Spirit World since she sacrificed herself for firebending at the end of Book 1 and became the sun.

This also means that with only Korra and Makolin left as the members of the Krew there is need for the adding of Howl, the White Lotus guard, as an official member of Team Avatar. Howl factors into this based on the fact that since Mako and Bolin are now combined, there needs to be a third member of the team. There will probably be some awkward sexual tension going on knowing Bryke and the other writers, but Howl will generally fill in a Sokka role, slight comedic relief with a surprising amount of knowledge up his sleeve. At least that’s what I remember Ash saying he would be if they went with this route for Book 2.

And after all that chaos with spirit magic and combined souls and suns…

I bet you’re all wondering what ship will be end-game.

Who am I kidding? OF COURSE that’s what you’ve been waiting for.

And the answer to that question is…

MAKORRAHOWLIN

It’s completely canon now.

tumblr_m3g342d2Jw1rrvwgk

This will be my one post about the shippingness. Because it looks like Episode 5 is going to be a huge ship battle, like at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

madame-fussybritches:

know Bryke’s laughing at Makorra fans. I know it.

Makorra: Phew, it took us an entire week to repair the ship’s damages.
Bryke: Oh, hey guise. I think you forgot to fix that leak.
(Asami: Good morning, sweetie!)
Bryke: Op, and that leak too.
(Asami: You look good champ!)
Bryke: And there’s another one over there too!
(*Masami Eskimo kiss*)
Bryke: Well, would you look at that? I think you’re sinking again. HA HAHA HAHA HA HA HA HA HAHA. Toodles! *ollies out*

Can’t we all just get along?

More like this from marikodraws!

“She rode her dragon into battle and burned down the entire country. Then she jumped into a volcano. It was so romantic.”
