I finally made a contribution to the LoK Fandom! It took forever too.

One of my favorite aspects of Korra is the carefully peppered in character moments. In only six episodes, we’ve learned a ton about each member of the show’s large ensemble, while avoiding endless stretches of backstory exposition. I like it that way — for example, I know just enough about both Mako and Bolin to understand what they think about the world and how they make decisions. I doubt I’ll ever shut up about that perfectly executed moment where we see Mako lightning bending at his power plant day job.
There’s a bit we don’t know yet — how did these two end up where they are today? Why is Mako all brooding like? — but I’m hoping we don’t learn too much more. I like that Korra lives mostly in the now (other than the teases to Tenzin’s past and the reoccurring flashback to a pivotal moment in Aang’s Avatar career), so unless the death of Mako and Bolin’s parents is tied directly to Amon, the central conflict or Korra’s own story, I’d say we don’t need too much of pre-Korra Mako. I agree that I want a moment in the series that helps me love Mako the same way we love goofy ol’ Bolin, but I’m hoping that moment is one of present day heroism.

This is the first, quick concept I did of Tahno, the team captain of the Wolf-bats, voiced by the great Rami Malek from HBO’s The Pacific. The character was largely inspired by the ridiculously over the top Japanese kickboxer Kizaemon Saiga, whose ridiculous antics include having his cornermen fix his hair with a mirror between rounds in K-1 matches. Ryu whipped up Tahno’s character design (which I think Korra Nation released) based on this concept, to which I made some minor tweaks, and there you have the character we love to hate.

UM. Hey artistically-driven fans – I’d love a better picture of this.
I can’t believe I didn’t notice: when Asami bring Pabu in to congratulate the Ferrets after their first match, HE’S WEARING A UNIFORM. That means….either Asami or Bolin MADE IT FOR HIM.
SO CUTE.

A quick concept sketch before I go to bed-
A thought occured to me today- what would the schools be like in republic city? Obviously it’d be a pretty big public school because of the size of the city. I know there would be a lot of schools but I decided to do a sketch design of what I think the uniforms would look like for the most populous one. I tried to keep it with mutual colours and not with the four nation colours for different students as that could cause discrimination and separation in ways, so despite being from different nations all children’s uniforms look the same. Unless they went to special bending academies or something. Both boys and girls have the same style of pants/ leg-wear and arm-wear just the tops are different. I tried to keep an even mix of old style western and eastern uniforms.
I might do some full art tomorrow of this.
There can be variations with the uniform such as longer/shorter sleeves for the different seasons and blazers. Hats and other accessories such as scarves and gloves are permitted as long as they are not in the classroom.
My mom just came in my room and yelled “WAKE UP KORRA!! MAKO IS WAITING FOR YOU!”
Okay! 😀
At first I was like: “Stink eye, fandom!”
But now I’m like: “You know what, the message itself is valuable, even it it was an excuse for someone to draw someone messing with Korra’s boob.”

Scott Says: [EXCERPT] Awareness of breast cancer is a huge deal, necessary and good. But this picture is wrong on many different levels. First is the disembodied hand. It is not checking, it is groping. If Korra was checking herself…not an issue. Second is the look on her face. I’m guessing the original artist is implying the seriousness of the issue, but it looks like rape. Someone is groping her, she’s not enjoying it, but has to put up with it anyways. I love being a fan of the show and discussing it with other fans, but I would like to not have to see objectification of Korra or other women on the show. That is the very antithesis to the spirit of the show and the strength of the female characters there. In that same vein, I feel that the picture of Korra and Asami naked was unnecessary and disappointing to see on the site. It is degrading to their characters to be seen as solely sexual objects and against what the show is about.
DA7E SAYS: [EXCERPT] after a quick study of the 146 likes, re-blogs and comments on the Korra Breast Cancer post, I decided to leave it up with some of this correspondence on it. I can’t be an arbiter of facial-expression interpretation, satire or genuine breast cancer awareness. I hope you understand.
I can promise you that the image will stay safely buried several pages below the front one and I’ll keep a sharp eye on what gets posted from now on an not even stray towards the group of fandom feverishly illustrating their Korra fantasies. I guess after seeing so much straight-up pornography, I was ready to entertain the thought of one Breast Cancer Post, especially since I still can’t tell if it was well-intentioned and poorly executed or entirely sexual.My aunt is actually a survivor, so I’d like to think I’m giving this issues it’s proper weight. And am more than willing to post some of this correspondence with the breast cancer post. We don’t want to diminish your enjoyment of the show.Thanks Scott!
