KORRA GAME WILL HAVE PRO BENDING…but only for CPU and you.

From the first HANDS ON report from the game (CLICK!):

Lastly, Platinum is making a competitive arena mode, where you can take on other benders in 3 vs. 3 matches. Although this seems like an opportunity for online multiplayer, the game is only single-player, and these matches are fought against computer-controlled characters.”

Otherwise, it sounds really interesting from a hack-n-slash combo perspective. And it looks great.

And, we’re back! (Soon!)

Hello Republic City Dispatch fan group of awesomeness.

We were not expecting Korra to come to us so soon, and we were not expecting the leaks to lead to such a swift dumping of the first three episodes.

It’s very mixed news. It’s bad news for Korra gaining new fans, but great news for us, the Avatar faithful.

Should we start the #AirBook4 tag now to avoid a DVD dump that would financially benefit no one? Seriously, there are consequences to only watching Korra on Nick.com

IS THIS GOOD CHANGE OR BAD CHANGE?!?!

What to expect in Book 3, both scheduling and plot wise will be discussed. What can we do as fans to help a season that’s already being scheduled like no one cares about it? We’ll discuss that too.

Please forgive our dust around here as I try to get the site, the feed and everyone’s lives back in Dispatching mode. I checked our iTunes and RSS feed last night as was able to access all episodes. That and scrolling through the many useful posts at RepublicCityDispatch.com should get you everything RCD you might need as I update index pages and whatnots.

Here’s some helpful links.

As to what to expect from us? We’re recording something for next week, then we’ll drop the first Episode of Book Three sometime next weekend.

Here’s what we know we’re covering on premiere weekend for sure:

A Breath of Fresh Air: After the events of Harmonic Convergence, Avatar Korra discovers that her decision to leave the spirit portals open has unexpected consequences. Wild spirit vines have overgrown Republic City and Airbenders are suddenly popping up across the four nations.

Rebirth of a Nation: Korra, Tenzin and Team Avatar search for new Airbenders in an effort to recruit them and rebuild the Air Nation. Meanwhile, a band of sinister criminals are organizing to hunt down the Avatar themselves.

Welcome back. Flameo, hotmen.

-Da7e-

The Legend of Korra Book Three: Change will debut on Friday, June 27th at 7pm on Nickelodeon.

WOW.

That is much sooner than I was expecting.

More at IGN.

Is this the first footage of Book 3: Change? Sure looks it. Savvy Korra fan youpje uploaded a commercial from the Netherlands revealing what appears to be snippets of Book 3 interspersed with shots from Book 1 & 2. Korra spirit-bending water by some vine-covered buildings (inside RC?), Korra in an elevator, a shirtless Tenzin airbending, Team Korra standing outside a zeppelin-esque vehicle, and a mysterious figure riding a dragon. Our friends at ATLA: Annotations are convinced that’s Zuko (and Da7e is praying that it’s Zuko, because if the ATLA character doesn’t appear in Book 3, he’s going to rip his goatee out).

It’s all a bit of a tease, but with production well into Book 4, it shouldn’t be too long until sharper looks and a release date announcement are upon us. SDCC is always a good bet.

What do you make of this footage? Talk to us — it’s been awhile.

The always excellent PBS Ideas Channel asks the question that has lit a thousand fires: Is Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra “anime?”

You might remember the most lengthy of the several times we’ve brought this up on the episode “If There Was A Korra Movie” HERE (from last year’s haitus).

As for this year’s haitus, we’re producing another episode this week. We’ll for sure be back soonsies.

Until then: Cartoon or Anime? The never-ending debate.

Hey guys! I have to call you on your “prequel story” gripe, citing, of course, midichlorians. First, midichlorians are not the Force, just as Raava is not bending (however she technically is the Avatar spirit, or a component of it). Second, just because you found The Phantom Menace to be a disengaged slog (I happen to find it a brilliant work of science fiction), that doesn’t mean that all origin stories should be feared, and that revealing details about a mythical universe should be discouraged

Fair enough. The Phantom Menace is a good movie with some brilliant design work, and really, that podrace is still a mesmerizing sensory experience (although Da7e makes fun of me for enjoying SW: TPM because I fell asleep for 20 minutes of the 3D re-release when we saw it at midnight — long story). I would like Phantom Menace more if it weren’t a Star Wars movie or one that didn’t tie back to the Anakin Skywalker mythology.

Origin stories/prequels make sense to us fans. We want more answers because we love the mythology. But what I think we actually want is more of what made the first films/shows brilliant — and lingering mysteries are part of that. Beginnings Part 1 & 2 works because we only get a few answers. We can sit here mulling over the intricacies of becoming an Avatar, where the spirits came from and went, and a 1,000 other conjurations we unearth while scrutinizing the episodes. For me, TPM goes too far. Where did Anakin come from? Here. Why is he bad? Here’s why. How does The Force work? Here’s how.

I fear origin stories and prequels because they often cater too much to the fandom, existing to answer rather than tell a story worth investing in. I think we all loved Wan’s story because it catapults the Avatar universe back in the same way Korra propelled it forward. Again, it’s about reverse and forward engineering and watching how time affects the universe. TPM doesn’t really do that. It makes callbacks. It tips its hat. It’s the wrong kind of prequelization and it’s a symbol for how fiction can be responsive to fan cries for explanations.

We should never be into Korra or any show for the details. This is not why we love things, although it often clouds our view. It’s fun to theorize and get pumped for big reveals. But less is always more in this case. Especially with prequels.

Here’s my question to everyone, using Star Wars as an example: They want to make a prequel film centered on Yoda, what his life was like before TPM. What would make you want to see that film? What is Yoda’s story about and why are his early years essential to that arc?

Even though Beginners was about Wan, I learned a lot about Korra during the episodes. In TPM, I don’t know if I learned anything more about the Star Wars U and Darth Vader, mythologically or emotionally.

– Matt

Nice Catch, Nick!

Semi-Interesting story:

I’ve bought a Season Pass on iTunes for The Legend of Korra Book 2 so I can rewatch a few scenes right before the podcast and/or drag through the episode in case I need visual reference while we’re talking.

My girlfriend – also a Korra fan – was living with me for a few days before she moved to Los Angeles (she moved, not me, I am totally the Mako in this situation for better or worse). I had to wake up and podcast for ‘Civil Wars, Part 1" the day she flew out, so that morning I downloaded the episode as soon as possible so we could watch our last episode together for awhile (or at least until she learns Airbending and can come back to Republic City).

As we were watching it, I realized the audio sync was off and the dialogue was somewhere between a half and full second delayed to the animation. It was GROSS, but we watched it, because it was Korra and it was the last Korra we’d be in the same state for.

image

Last week I scrolled through it again just to see if it was an issue with my iPad, but – nope – total sync error.

I wrote iTunes letting them know, but also allowing that it might have been a user-side error.

So imagine my surprise when I woke up to this e-mail from iTunes this morning:

Dear iTunes Customer,

Thank you for downloading the TV show “Civil Wars, Pt. 1” from The Legend of Korra, Book 2: Spirits. The item you received may have had some noticeable quality issues. We have corrected the problem and a new copy is available to download, free of charge. To receive the new version, please re-download the title from iTunes.

Nice catch, me! Or, iTunes overall. But I’m totally giving credit to myself for seeing something and saying something.

Season pass holders: you finally get the good version of Civil Wars, Part 1 today. Yip Yip!
