The always excellent PBS Ideas Channel asks the question that has lit a thousand fires: Is Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra “anime?”

You might remember the most lengthy of the several times we’ve brought this up on the episode “If There Was A Korra Movie” HERE (from last year’s haitus).

As for this year’s haitus, we’re producing another episode this week. We’ll for sure be back soonsies.

Until then: Cartoon or Anime? The never-ending debate.

#28: The Search 1-3

Good Morning Benders and Non-Benders alike and Welcome to Republic City Dispatch, a radio programme covering Nickelodeon’s Legend of Korra series. This week: there’s no Korra to discuss, so our attention is turned to the land of graphic novels where Fire Lord Zuko has convinced Avatar Aang to let Azula join the GAang on the search for the truth about his long-lost mother. And now, without further ado, your hosts who mostly have mothers, Matt, Da7e, Devindra!

This is a song Stacy wrote as a fan song for herself for Avatar: The Legend of Korra, but we loved it so much, we play it at all our shows now. We still love Mako and Korra, but Asami is mysteriously epic.”

We took a trip up to LA and ended up with Vaatu….BEST TRIP EVER!

#27: Darkness Falls/Light In The Dark

This week: the conclusion of Book Two: Spirits sees the release of a Cosmic Kaiju Korra! Vaatu bonds with Unalaq to form the Dark Avatar, deus ex Jinora! The second battle of Republic City Bay, this time with Inception BWAMP Chest weapons! Who will help you find a light in the darkness? Maybe your hosts: Matt, Da7e Devindra and Joanna!

amethystjello:

yes, I made Vaatu quote Genie. it seemed like a good idea at 4am.

am I kicked out of the fandom yet?

I just realized that Commander Zhao (in A:TLA and Korra) is voiced by Jason Isaacs, more commonly known as Lucius Malfoy!! Like WHAT?!?!?

That’s like when I realized Katara was Ann from Arrested Development. : )

Though I still confuse Jason Isaacs with Timothy Dalton much more than most people.

I believe the previous two episodes plus the finale episodes are meant to be seen together. When I finished last weeks episodes I felt like I immediately wanted to see the finale, thus I was so happy that I didn’t have to wait a whole week and I could pretty much see them back to back. I didn’t damper the excitement for me, it was even bigger than it would’ve been if I had seen the episodes one week apart when it probably would’ve died down. That said, I can’t wait to see the finale again Friday

I agree the whole thing feels like a “Book Two: Spirits: The Movie,” especially when the beginning of the season had plots that had nothing to do with what the master plot ended up being.

However, if you’re producing episodic television, deciding to let the last four episodes function as one episode is tricky.

This is sort of the question I’ve been orbiting around with Book Two overall: Just how OK am I that this season only works well when there aren’t breaks between the episodes (you know, long breaks where we debate each mini-decision Korra makes)?

Anyway – yes. I’m also psyched to see the Finale again.

-Da7e-

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for your questions and comments. We’re compiling for the Finale Episode, which might end Book 2’s boradcast episodes, but I’d bet on some future RCD Episodes covering the comics and the season overall.

All to say that CHANGE isn’t coming until NEXT book. : )

BOOK THREE: Change

Source – WSJ

About the finale being released online first, it’s not the first time Korranation has done this. Remember for book 1 they released the first 2 episodes online well before they aired on Nick. I don’t think it being released online first will affect anything.

Releasing the first two episodes of a TV show — especially a brand new one — is fairly common practice. And it makes perfect sense: What better way to rope new viewers and/or strike up some buzz than give audiences a chance to watch the premiere at their leisure?

Dropping the finale of a TV season with less than 24 hours is something totally different. A finale is an event. Or it should be — while there was a swell of support to get the episodes out there (expected as us fans are always pining for more Korra), they were being dropped at midnight after two episodes had already aired. As a viewer, that was an overload. It’s not that the move will “affect” anything scheduling or ratings wise (although judging from how many reactions I’ve seen on Tumblr/Twitter/etc a ratings dip on Friday wouldn’t be surprising), my frustration came from people not having the breathing room to enjoy “Night of a Thousand Stars”/“Harmonic Convergence” for the awesome episodes that they were. As we’ve talked about on the podcast in the past, fandom can get swept up in the plot points and speculative questions. That’s what separates an early premiere and an early finale — one pours fuel on the conversation, the other wraps everything up and focuses fandom’s sights on the future (everyone is already wondering what Book 3 will be about). I wanted to luxuriate in the greatness of Friday’s 8pm double-header. Now we’re just done with Book 2.

Oh no!

We’re sorry that you felt less excited somehow, that’s not cool. However, we don’t get any advance notice on plots from anyone at Nickelodeon or the Korra show, so the guess that there would be a “Dark Avatar” that showed up somewhere was based on context clues in the story.

We don’t want to spoil anything for anyone, but we do want to guess crazy things. Like how Devindra always says Bolin is going to die.

Please don’t be mad! We will never spoil anything that hasn’t been made available to the fandom because we get access to everything at the same time you do!

REMIX!

“1) The love-triangle will come to a definite conclusion, if that’s your thing” You seem very confident that the triangle won’t be back next season. Do you have some inside info? I’ve always been indifferent towards it, but I just want it gone so people stop complaining.

I said that was in the FUTURE, right?

I don’t think it’s going to end any time soon, I think we have more complications in the ‘shipping.

BUT, I do think the series will end, like the previous one, with fixed couples. It just might take until Book Four to get there.

-Da7e-

Wouldn’t it seem that by imprisoning vaatu the material and spiritual worlds have been out of balance for like 10k years and that Unalaqu is doing the right thing but badly

I’d expect to hear this argument out of Unalaq’s mouth sooner rather than later. But, seriously, when has it been good when a character in a dramatic series trusts the giant black spirit monster over the tiny white spirit monster? : )

-Da7e-

You said in podcast that only the avatar could enter the spirit world in the original series. But didn’t Sokka go into the spirit world (in the Winter Solstice part 1. also remember how he knew that there were no bathrooms in the spirit world) as well as Iroh went into the spirit world in search of a way to revive his son (according to the extras on Zuko Alone)?

That was me that said that, and – yes – there are no bathrooms in the Spirit World. That was an oversight. However, it does backwardsly explain how Unalaq is so chummy with the Spirits despite the portals being closed until very recently.

Interesting bit of world building that Iroh was able to choose to let his body die while he remained in the Spirit World…

…oh no. Jinora.

-Da7e-

Was I the only one confused by the lack of explanation as to why Jinora couldn’t just wake up? Since she was simply astral projecting into the spirit world, shouldn’t she be able to?

I think it’s part Astral Projecting and part your Spirit actually leaving your body and wandering around. But you could also chalk it up to a weird Unalaq Dark Spirit Powers. I didn’t know he could destroy someone’s soul like he threatened to do last episode, so maybe he has some sort of bonding spell.

I wonder if I actually want the show to address this or if I should just move on.
