#31: A Breath of Fresh Air/Rebirth/The Earth Queen

Good Morning Benders and Non-Benders alike and Welcome to Republic City Dispatch, a radio programme covering Nickelodeon’s Legend of Korra series. This week: Spirit Vines have engulfed Republic City and President Raiko has banned Korra as Team Avatar takes to the Earth Kingdom on their new mission to rebuild the Airbender Nation. Which one of your hosts is in danger of being kidnapped by the Dai Li? Is it Matt, Dave, Devindra or Joanna!

A new episode of the show coming tomorrow! For now, check out Patches’ written reviews:

mattpatches:

Read all of my reviews from The Legend of Korra: Book 2.

For most people, recaps are day-after reading. The author files their story, people reflect on the episode for a morning, and that’s that. Next!

But I’m quite proud of the criticism I wrote for Vulture during The Legend of Korra’s second season. It’s a show packed with provocative themes and animated nuance. Compared to Book 1, it was ambitious and a little messy. There was tons to talk about week-to-week. When it worked and even when it didn’t, I was thrilled to spotlight the passion poured into each episode. Thought it made sense to share these again.

I’ll be writing about Book 3 at Screencrush.com. Look at for posts going up after new episodes air on Friday.

KORRA GAME WILL HAVE PRO BENDING…but only for CPU and you.

From the first HANDS ON report from the game (CLICK!):

Lastly, Platinum is making a competitive arena mode, where you can take on other benders in 3 vs. 3 matches. Although this seems like an opportunity for online multiplayer, the game is only single-player, and these matches are fought against computer-controlled characters.”

Otherwise, it sounds really interesting from a hack-n-slash combo perspective. And it looks great.

Thanks for choosing not to watch/share anything from the leaked episodes!

You’re welcome!

It’s been tough for me because I personally don’t believe in the concept of a “spoiler,” so I know I’m going to break and read descriptions of the leaks before Friday.

However, I also work for Viacom and TV scheduling is a harsh mistress I dance with a lot. I can’t speak for whomever is doing the dubs for Team Korra, but I can’t imagine how soul-crushing it must have been for the core team to see the middle part of a key season leak out. In solidarity with the creatives, I don’t want to torrent or download anything stolen.

And, yes, there’s a difference between a leak and theft and this WAS THEFT.

Anyway. My feelings get even more complicated when I consider that I don’t know what the best form of positive re-enforcement is knowing that Book Four is already getting completed and that’s all we’ve been promised in the Korra story.

So wouldn’t anything I do to give Nick ratings ultimately be more valuable to Nick, a company I don’t have complete faith in over Team Avatar whom I trust completely?

At this point, if Korra’s core creatives just opened up a PayPal Tip Jar, I’d kick them a few bucks there.

The good news is this Friday we catch up to the first of the leaked episodes, so in the future we’ll barely remember this frustrating time period.

-Da7e-

Since Book 3 starts on June 27 and Book 2 isn’t released on DVD until July 1,, is there any way to rewatch Book 2 before 3 starts?

#30: Book 3 Air Date and Trailer!

Good Morning Benders and Non-Benders alike and Welcome to Republic City Dispatch, a radio programme covering Nickelodeon’s Legend of Korra series. This week: Change comes crashing upon an unsuspecting fandom and suddenly, more Korra is upon us! A jam-packed orchestral trailer signals Book 3 is only a week away! What say your four hosts, Matt, Dave, Devindra and Joanna?

avatarlegends:

217 days is the shortest season hiatus in the Avatar franchise since the one preceding Book 2 of AtLA.  Also worth noting that this hiatus is less than half as long as the 447 day one preceding Book 2 of LoK.

Logging onto tumblr after the Book 3 news is released

And, we’re back! (Soon!)

Hello Republic City Dispatch fan group of awesomeness.

We were not expecting Korra to come to us so soon, and we were not expecting the leaks to lead to such a swift dumping of the first three episodes.

It’s very mixed news. It’s bad news for Korra gaining new fans, but great news for us, the Avatar faithful.

Should we start the #AirBook4 tag now to avoid a DVD dump that would financially benefit no one? Seriously, there are consequences to only watching Korra on Nick.com

IS THIS GOOD CHANGE OR BAD CHANGE?!?!

What to expect in Book 3, both scheduling and plot wise will be discussed. What can we do as fans to help a season that’s already being scheduled like no one cares about it? We’ll discuss that too.

Please forgive our dust around here as I try to get the site, the feed and everyone’s lives back in Dispatching mode. I checked our iTunes and RSS feed last night as was able to access all episodes. That and scrolling through the many useful posts at RepublicCityDispatch.com should get you everything RCD you might need as I update index pages and whatnots.

Here’s some helpful links.

As to what to expect from us? We’re recording something for next week, then we’ll drop the first Episode of Book Three sometime next weekend.

Here’s what we know we’re covering on premiere weekend for sure:

A Breath of Fresh Air: After the events of Harmonic Convergence, Avatar Korra discovers that her decision to leave the spirit portals open has unexpected consequences. Wild spirit vines have overgrown Republic City and Airbenders are suddenly popping up across the four nations.

Rebirth of a Nation: Korra, Tenzin and Team Avatar search for new Airbenders in an effort to recruit them and rebuild the Air Nation. Meanwhile, a band of sinister criminals are organizing to hunt down the Avatar themselves.

Welcome back. Flameo, hotmen.

The Legend of Korra Book Three: Change will debut on Friday, June 27th at 7pm on Nickelodeon.

WOW.

That is much sooner than I was expecting.

Ready, set, SKETCH!

Whoa — where to begin?? There’s a ton of footage packed into this first look trailer and I couldn’t be more excited. The animation is sharper and more dynamic, there are tons of new faces joining the cast (including a few from ATLA), and hints at a plot that could jump back and forth in time. What do you see? Here are a few moments that jumped out:

:32 – Imprisoned ____? Later in the trailer, we see him airbend!
:38 – Is that Bumi airbending?
:42 – Gal with eye on her forehead. You tell me. What are we looking at?
:47 – Crazy-eyed lady who can waterbend. Instantly thought Azula, but this is a waterbender….
:57 – Is this kid a new airbender or just a follower of the Airbender way? He has a staff…
:59 – I swear this looks like a young Lin Beifong. More flashbacks this season?
1:02 – Yes, Asami action!
1:10 – Jinora, back aestral projecting herself in the spirit world. But a very creepy spirit world.
1:13 – Earth Kingdom evil lady who kind of looks like President Raiko’s gal pal (but isn’t, I know)
1:18 – ZUKO. Da7e just sighed a breath of relief.
1:23 – Another airbender, this time in Earth Kingdom-looking threads.
1:24 – A Dune-like sandworm. I am so ready for more Korra fantasy (rather than tech-heavy Republic City)
1:27 – The evil waterbender returns. She really looks like Azula. Offspring? 1:30 – Jinora falling — noooo!
1:34 – Korra with a whale spirit, recalling Star Trek IV
1:40 – Zuko in action. Most excellent.
1:45 Evil Waterbending lady leading some nega-Team Avatar. Terrifying.

What did I miss? What are we looking at? Go to town in the comments!

(And please, please, please, if you couldn’t resist the temptation of devouring those leaked episodes do not share what you know about them. We’re not OK with the leaks, and as fans, we want to experience this show as Bryke intended. Again, no episode talk right now.)

– Patches

And now we go back to pretending this didn’t happen. See you for Book 3!

bryankonietzko:

Howdy, friends. As you have likely already heard, four episodes from Book 3 were leaked this past weekend. It is bad enough that it happened at all, but it would have been a little less of a disaster had it at least been the first four episodes of the season. Instead, the third through the sixth episodes popped out online, causing confusion and, at least on our end of things, frustration. As you all know, these episodes take a ton of concerted effort from scores of individuals. We craft these continuous storylines and the animation as best we can, and hope that they are presented in a way that allows everyone to enjoy them to the fullest. But when leaks happen, the work we meticulously prepared for the audience is fumbled unceremoniously.

Nickelodeon is obviously a massive corporation with outlets all over the world. These outlets get the episodes in advance so they can translate and dub them for their markets. We typically deliver the episodes to the network quite close to their U.S. premieres, but in the case of Book 3, we have actually already finished the entire season as of last week. The network has some plans in the works for it and needs to wait on its release, so we have been keeping quiet while keeping our noses to the Book 4 grindstone. Unfortunately, the longer the episodes sit on all these shelves all over the world, the probability of leaks increases.

So, yeah… It is unfortunate it played out this way. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer before Book 3 is released properly and with respect to all the people who worked hard to make it and to the audience who wants to watch it.

Holy cow! Legend of Korra Sound Designer and our friend Ben Wynn (aka Deru) just released his latest album… as a hand-carved wooden video projector! That’s really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to 1979, which combines Ben’s ambient sounds, short films, and an interactive web element to build a fascinating mythology. Ben teased 1979 on our “Sounds of Book 2” podcast, but we highly recommend exploring the album’s companion website and picking up the album in digital, vinyl, or projector form. 1979 is its own brand of cool.

“That’s why we’re drinking tea: To calm the mind.” – Uncle Iroh

When I noticed Adagio Teas sold Avatar-branded teas, I knew I had to pick up one in honor of everyone’s favorite wisdom-deliverer. Looks like they have flavors for Aang, Zuko, Toph, and more. Happy to see Iroh’s flavor recalls the Jasmine Dragon, although his favorite flavor was Ginseng. Still, I can’t imagine he’d turn down a fresh cup of tea, regardless of herbal origins.

What tea are drinking today? Did you know tea pairs perfectly with past episodes of Republic City Dispatch? Little known fact.

– Patches

Is this the first footage of Book 3: Change? Sure looks it. Savvy Korra fan youpje uploaded a commercial from the Netherlands revealing what appears to be snippets of Book 3 interspersed with shots from Book 1 & 2. Korra spirit-bending water by some vine-covered buildings (inside RC?), Korra in an elevator, a shirtless Tenzin airbending, Team Korra standing outside a zeppelin-esque vehicle, and a mysterious figure riding a dragon. Our friends at ATLA: Annotations are convinced that’s Zuko (and Da7e is praying that it’s Zuko, because if the ATLA character doesn’t appear in Book 3, he’s going to rip his goatee out).

It’s all a bit of a tease, but with production well into Book 4, it shouldn’t be too long until sharper looks and a release date announcement are upon us. SDCC is always a good bet.

What do you make of this footage? Talk to us — it’s been awhile.

A new friend has arrived.

Did the topic of a possible release of the book 2 soundtrack come up in the podcast?

Perhaps because an ATLA soundtrack is starting to sound like an impossibility, while the Korra: Book 1 soundtrack feels like a gift from a lion turtle, asking Jeremy and Ben about a possible Book 2 soundtrack totally slipped my mind. But I checked back for an update afterward and here’s the sad truth: It’s not in the works because there’s not much of an interest from Nick at this point. Maybe that has to do with sales from the Book 1 soundtrack — I don’t have evidence to back that up — but currently, there are no plans to round up Jeremy’s Book 2 music for an official release. That could change if there’s enough demand from fans, both on Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook/other facets of the Internet (I’m sure listening, sharing, and commenting on an interview with the composer and sound designer doesn’t hurt…) and also supporting the Book 1 album by actually purchasing it. A soundtrack release makes sense if there’s money to be made on a release. That’s a ball in fandom’s court.

For now, we can relive the musical moments both in the show and on this month’s Republic City Dispatch. This episode was really a way of stoking the fire through a discussion of creativity and the potential of musical drama. If you guys love the Korra score as much as we do, make yourselves heard!

In case you missed it, here’s the podcast featuring Jeremy and Ben.
