I’m not sure Wan Shi Tong will be thrilled with an Airbender back in his library….

The Legend of Korra Book 2: Spirits trailer is here!
Let’s discuss this thing. Drop highlights, thought-provoking moments, and theories below! This is grander than I could have ever imagined
– Patches
Update: JuJuSeed and Empyreankosmo say that there will be two episodes that introduce Wan was the first Avatar. To that I still wonder, how? How do we just throw two backstory episodes into a narrative that’s trucking along? What do we think will be the segue that allows for the main storyline to take a two episode break?
Book 2 will introduce the very first Avatar, Wan. He’ll be voiced by Walking Dead actor Steven Yeun.
Here is my big question: How do we get there? Flashbacks were a big part of Book 1, but they were born out of the narrative. Aang was communicating with Korra. I would suspect that, if we see flashbacks, it would be Wan needing to make contact. No willy nilly jumping backwards in Legend of Korra.
Here’s my real theory: We meet Wan in the spirit world. The background of this picture is what clinches it for me. The surreal shapes of trees and the colors of the sky…. has to be the spirit world. Right?
That is just my (Patches) thinking. Let the theories fly. How is Wan going to figure in to Korra’s Book 2 adventure?
Listen to Two Exclusive Clips From the Legend of Korra Soundtrack
Was happy to bring the Korra love to New York Magazine’s Vulture. Head over there to hear samples from the music and an interview with composer Jeremy Zuckerman of The Track Team.
Plus: They’re having a soundtrack signing at Comic-Con! I am super jealous if you’re going to be there.

First look footage of The Legend of Korra: Book 2.
Nickelodeon’s abrasive graphics and muzac don’t really set the tone here — but I like what I see. While it doesn’t have the majesty and unexpected elegance of Book 1’s Republic City setting, Book 2 promises a Miyazaki-style fantasy arc. Maybe that’s why it looks a bit more “cartoony” than Book 1. The spirit animals are bubbly and the backgrounds play to that aesthetic over the hyper-detail of RC. I’m glad their taking risks rather than replicating what worked in the first season. – Patches
What do you think?

Noooope.
I did my due diligence today scouring the web to try and find this “official” Netflix/Nickelodeon confirmation/leak.
Sadly, it looks like some stray listings for Book One: Air in Ireland and the UK sent people into a tizzy because it also aligned with a random fan prediction of “May 12th” made in December on a Wika message board.
Plus the NICK message boards fanned the flame with many, many panicked animated emoticons HERE.
So let’s relax, we’re probably still getting the Book One DVD first.
I’ve been asked by Devindra to tell you that we are going to upload the /Filmcast Benefit we all did with Jeremy Zuckerman, talking about the scoring for Avatar, Korra and Book 2. We’re going to throw it in the RCD Feed, once we get ourselves back on iTunes and edit the episode, etc.
Until then, you can always chill with me at AvatarPatel’s YouTube page where he uploads the best in Korra video content…unofficial Korra video content. : )

BLU-RAY, COMIN’ AT YA!
IGN has discovered the powers that be have decided The Book One Blu/DVD will come a WHOLE WEEK EARLY(er than expected)!
New date: July 9th 2013
IT’S OFFICIAL – The Legend of Korra Book One will get a DVD AND BLU-RAY Release!
It will be coming out July 16th and it’s Nickelodeon’s FIRST series to be released on Blu-Ray. As a result, they really want you to buy it, so while the DVD will have sporadic commentaries on specific episodes, only the Blu-Ray will have commentaries on EVERY episode plus eight Animatic featurettes.
There will also be a Puppet Bender short with Korra characters that will be on both sets.
The DVD pre-order is already up, well update with the BLU when we find it.
Not, like, a date, but promotional materials for Nickelodeon suggests that Korra Book 2 will be air during Fall 2013. Everything we’ve heard has supported that theory, but nothing has hard confirmed it that we know of.

I’m sorry, Season 2 is so far gone. We’re already doing Season 3 now so everything’s so muddled.
– Seychelle Gabriel, Asami, to IGN at WonderCon
Well, we knew Book 3 was coming, but – GOOD NEWS – they seem to be going non-stop. Which means we might get to go through Korra fully before we have children!
Voices are on Book 3, scoring is half-to-¾ the way through Book 2 and a handful of episodes are in color correct. Fall looks pretty close.
-Da7e-
Depends. Could there be? Yes, there could be. Though I’m not sure when it makes the most narrative sense to bring that up. Do you investigate it immediately as a way for Korra to enter the Spirit World? That’s what it seems like from the footage we’ve seen of Book 2 so far. Since all bending originates from the Spirit World, I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re dealing with this pretty early on in the season (especially since it now sounds like well get more Lin backstory, so she may not be as absent from Book 2 as we feared).
The other option would be to let Korra and everyone else feel like a BAMF for a little while, then yank her bending out from under her again in a future book.
I’ll trust Bryan and Mike here.

PS – Like Adventure Time or just have Netflix Instant? It’s PODCAST TIME.
PPS – We’re investigating the possibility of breaking out RCDispatch crossover hour with the SlashFilmAid Podcastathon into the RCDispatch feed. We got to talk to Jeremy Zuckerman of the Track Team again and he let us know what the Spirit World will sound like and how far through Book 2’s score he is.
SATURDAY – /Film FilmAid 10-hour Podcast w/RCDispatch Crossover Hour!
Make sure to stop by this link at 3PM Pacific, 6PM EST to listen to Devindra and Matt talk composition and KORRA SCORING with Jeremy Zuckerman during the RCDispatch cross-over hour of the /Filmcast FilmAid Podcastathon!
All times are PACIFIC
9 AM – 10 AM: Writer/Director Rian Johnson
10 AM – 11 AM: Writer/Director/Actor David Wain (with Scott Beggs from FilmSchoolRejects)
11 AM – noon: Writer/Producer Damon Lindelof
noon – 1 PM: Director Bryan Singer and Director Jason Reitman
1 PM – 2 PM: Writer C. Robert Cargill and Matt Singer from Indiewire
2 PM – 3 PM: [TBD]
3 PM – 4 PM: Composer Jeremy Zuckerman (Republic City Dispatch podcast crossover)
4 PM – 6:15 PM: Director Vincenzo Natali does a LIVE commentary of SPLICE on the air!
6:15 PM – 7 PM: /Film staff and wrap up
Certainly possible, of course. Judging from The Promise, though, I think we have a lot more to investigate in this plot than what we know now. But we did get an Appa Fight, which made Issue 1 infinitely awesome.

Quick note, animation fans!
Patches and I were wondering why there wasn’t an Adventure Time podcast in the spirit of Republic City Dispatch. Not only do we think it’s a great show, but it’s about to go up on Netflix Instant, which is going to open the show up to a larger, more critical audience.
SO – we’ve assembled a group of all star internet people to start pushing out some Adventure Time fandom/discussion/podcasting.
You know Patches and Myself, but we’ve also got Mike Sampson of ScreenCrush, Scott Beggs of Film School Rejects and the Broken Projector podcast, and Michelle Said a freelance writer/editor of note currently plugging away at BrightWall/DarkRoom.
We’ll be joined by other luminaries of the podcasting and internet world and YOU BET we’re going to get as many people involved in making Adventure Time as humanly (or Dog-ly) possible!
Just letting you all know in case someone out there is ready for ADVENTURE TIME!
I guess the counter argument from me would be: Does it seem like Azula is sane enough to master-mind this craziness? She seems pretty far gone hallucinating her mother. So if we think we’re being jerked around, we’re being jerked around by the character…which I’m fine with.
Like the best lies, this one looks like a truth.
-Da7e-
At some point last season when we were speculating on specialized forms of bending, someone brought up how Airbenders really don’t suck or knock the air out of people. AND there’s air in everything. Like in your blood – which is why entering the vacuum of space is so bad for you (over 18? Watch Event Horizon!). Sound would be cool, but there’s lots of combat-ready air possibilities from my seat.
-Da7e-
I think it makes sense in terms of what we know about the Zuko/Ozai relationship in A:TLA. It also makes sense considering we knew Ozai was kind of crazy, but not Agni-Kai on his first born son kind of crazy. Now we know where THAT crazy came from. This oblique enough?
-Da7e-
All I remember thinking is that Ozai’s hatred of Zuko in A:TLA suddenly make a TON more sense.
-Da7e-
SQUEEEEEE! That Republic city back there or?
Book 2 color correction with Eska and Bolin.
Good question! That is the current discussion amongst the three hosts. We have a few ideas about what the rest of the “off-season” podcast episodes are going to be and right now we’re debating on splitting The Search up.
Personally, I’d rather do it all as a bundle, but if we start to get the idea that The Search isn’t going to wrap up by the time Book 2 starts (or if ideas in The Search inform Book 2), we’ll make sure everyone is working from the same source material as we move forward.
But – IT’S A HARD CHOICE! Like I said, the last page of The Search is a doozy, plot-wise, for the entire series up to this point.
-Da7e-
Every time I think of sound as a weapon, I think of the Hulk Thunder Clap from The Incredible Hulk. But that’s why I have Korra, right? To show me how I’m missing the awesomeness of the core concept? : )
-Da7e-
Grey DeLisle (the voice of Azula in A:TLA) has said she’s coming back to voice a Spirt character. We also get to see a frightening Spirit Wolf in The Search: Part One (and he’s on the cover of Part Two, so his existing is not a spoiler). I think it’s fairly safe to say that we’re looking a slightly more super-natural villain than we go in “Air."
As for specialized Airbending Technique, I’m not sure. We know the Air Monks were super peaceful and respectful of all life, so I dont think it’s going to be as violent as Bloodbending. Until Korra learned to Spirit-Bend at the end of Book One, I would have thought that was the Airbender technique.
There are so many places that you can manipulate air, maybe this specialized technique is something discovered by Korra, since the Airbenders have been wiped out during most of both series’ runs.
Any guesses out there?
-Da7e-
I wanted to publish this because you wrote it to us before THE SEARCH Part One, which makes you super smart for noticing and guessing that Azula and Ursa have a more complicated relationship than we were lead to believe.
-Da7e-
I’d be sad if Amon and Tarrlok aren’t mentioned again amongst our heroes, and the series overall seems to have a long memory. Especially considering we super-fans are supposed to be holding Zuko’s Mom’s past in our head at the same time as Korra enters the Spirit World. This mythology is only getting bigger, so I’d imagine at some point someone is going to wonder if Amon and Tarrlock got away.
-Da7e-
We’re all constantly re-loading THIS AMAZON PAGE:
…that lists the Legend Of Korra, Book One: AIR Blu-Ray. It used to have a pre-order option, but it got downgraded to a sign up alert.
BUT – it hasn’t been pulled down, so we’re holding out hope. If it’s hitting around lat May like we hear the DVD is, expect this page to transform into a pre-order page soon. I’m not sure why they’d withhold the Blu-Ray, but at least Amazon has the HD episodes available on Amazon Instant.
The Search Part One is AMAZING.
Let’s just say – spoiler free – that the last page pacs quite the punch that had me re-evaluating the entire Zuko family story we saw in the A:TLA series. Not to mention now I really want to see Zuko in Legend of Korra: Book 2.
HI EVERYONE! I know it seems like forever, and believe me, it feels like forever. Matt, Devindra and myself have contemplated doing a few episodes here and there, but in the end, we know that a timely Dispatch is worth two-or-three Miscellaneous Dispatches. Sure, we could do spin-off episodes all off-season, but instead we want to make RCD your rallying point for discussion about The Legend of Korra…when it’s airing.
If we get our hands on a DVD/Blu-Ray of Korra Season 1, you bet we’ll podcast. If The Search finishes before Season 2 starts: YOU BET WE’LL PODCAST.
We’re just not going to podcast about Korra all willy-nilly. We’ll be back weekly with Korra this fall and – honestly – we’ll be back before Korra starts with some lead up stuff. We’re planning.
HOWEVER – if your engagement has been found lacking, we’re opening up the “ASK” feature again and I’ll try to encourage people besides me to jump in and discuss with you all.
Have you read THE SEARCH: PART ONE? Did you attend MomoCon and get a dump of information about the new specialized Airbending technique we’ve been told exists? Watching any other great cartoons recently? Sound off in our comments section or via our “Ask” feature.
You can purchase The Search: Part One from Dark Horse HERE and make sure to check out Devindra on /Film’s 10-hour FILMAID benefit podcast this Saturday March 30th! It’s for a good cause and they’ll have awesome guests.
