“First of all, your podcast is great. And you actually got in the mood of the series and forseen the opening style! That’s amazing. Thanks for compiling all the theories about Amon and his identity and the way he took away bending. Here’s mine (purely for fun and for exploiting the Amon meme)”

This style is WIN!

Beautiful!

Have you ever heard of crack shipping? I mean, it was pretty common throughout A:TLA, you’d think the LOK would attract its own. Well, pretty much every fandom(that’s large and/or crazy enough) gets crack ships. Plus, the crack shippers know it’s crack. It’s cray cray. Now, the Makorra shippers’ response to crack ships… XD it’s not even a canon threat. it’s just people having some goddamn FUN.

I think I have learned my lesson about shippers, shipping and this blog/podcast: we don’t really get it (yet).

And from what I’m seeing in the Korra fan circles this morning, it’s going to be tough because the whole thing is about to reach a fever pitch come this weekend.

Let’s just all be nice to each other, okay? You can pair off any two characters that you want, just don’t flood me with “WHY U HATEZ HOWLERS YOU SUXXX” e-mails and messages. That was scary.

-Da7e-

What do you think about stand up comedian Amon?

I think it’s pretty brilliant.

-Da7e-

We acknowledge the leak has happened, but will not be discussing Episode 4 until it airs this Saturday at 11AM on Nickelodeon out of respect for the creators of the show and the Korra marketing team.

Avoid your Tumblr dashboards, just check back at @RCDispatch

Korra leakers, Wang Fire is watching you.

First of all Love your dispatch! I was wondering if you guys noticed all the Aladdin motifs? Bolin says he lives up in the attic and “It’s nothing fancy but it has some great views”Aladdin says that word for word! They also were called diamond of the rough by the announcer and their also like street rats! And finally when Mako was looking out towards airbender island at the end of leaf in the wind it wuz the exact same pose and the way Aladdin does! I wanna know what you guys think! from Miss A

Oh! Oh! This is fun!

PABU:

ABU:

I think this is pretty cool.

I also think a lot of it comes from being orphans, even though Aladdin’s origins is something Disney left out. If Disney knows how to do a character well, it’s orphans.

Not that I would look for Bolin to get a magic carpet or anything, but if he wants to burst into song one of these times, I’d certainly be game.

Howdy, love the show and digging this PodCast. Here is my question. If the advanced form of Fire Bending is lighting, the Advanced form of Earth Bending is Metal Bending, and the advanced form of Water Bending is Healing and Blood Bending. WHAT WOULD BE THE ADVANCED FORM OF AIR BENDING!? Sound manipulation? Maybe creating little vacuums? Sucking air out of people? Creating a vacuum would be powerful, all benders need to breath to bend. Oh an I am always willing to guest star on the podcast :)

And this from Listener Ian as well:

“You mentioned last episode about wanting to know how the more specialized forms of bending (metal & lightning) came about.  That got me thinking that it seems each of the four major bending forms has a more unique and specialized version (earth – metal, fire – lightning, water – blood) but nothing for air!  This could be because the airbenders were all but wiped out.  Just wondering what your thoughts on this would be – what could the specialization of air be and will this be explored in the show?”

Hmmmm.

Personally, I think that the Flying Air Sphere is the highest form of Air Bending. We only see Aang capable of flying without gliding while in the Air Sphere in The Avatar State.

But, I should mention that smarter group-minds than this one have put this up for debate and added it to the Avatar Wikia:

Airbending is the only art that apparently has no specific sub-skill or specialized form that has as of yet been revealed, although it has been speculated soundbending could fit into this category.

Sound Bending is when Aang uses his air to amplify a sound like a Bison whistle, a distracting sound or a call for help.

-Da7e-

Some people seem kind of Nerfted that Metal and Lightening bending are so prominent in LoK. They keep saying stuff like only masters can do, you know you don’t have to be a Chess master to learn how to play. But we kind of understand how metal-bending spend. Wasn’t lightening-bending some thing only the royal fire family knew? How do you think that skill got out.

I’m copping a bit from an e-mail listener Eric sent us, but the re-direction of lightning taught to Zuko by Uncle Iroh supposedly came from Iroh’s study of the water tribe’s bending techniques.

It would make a sort of natural sense that as the four nations came together and started cohabiting, it was less of a rarity for a fire bender to know water bending technique and visa-versa.

It seems like average bending skill level in LoK is much higher than A: TLA.

-Da7e-

Well, this is just WIN for everybody.

Ask Amon: When is the best time to wear a striped sweater?

via vklover11

Many thanks to avatar-etiquette for taking the time to field this rumor.

Who is Amon?

This question is most likely the second most bothersome issue to LoK fans (the first being, without even blinking, “What happened to Ursa?”)

Now, there have been quite a few theories floating around concerning his identity and the one presented here is the newest: Is Amon Lee from ATLA’s episode 207, Zuko Alone?

Many people had made the connection in “The Revelation” when Amon told his audience of his past. He and his non-bender parents lived a humble life on a farm; one day, a firebender had attacked his parents and burned his face, forcing him to conceal his scars behind his mask.

It should make sense, right? There are two pieces of compelling evidence, however, that will disprove this theory. They are concisely listed below:

  • Lee’s family was harassed by earthbender thugs, not a firebender.
  • The episode “Zuko Alone” had taken place in spring of 100 ASC, an entire 70 years before The Legend of Korra. If Lee were alive, he would be at least 80 years old.

This a delightful cover of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” about The Legend of Korra.

LET’S DUMP SOME AMON THEORIES, EH?

Did anyone catch the great religious parallel by Amon when he said “Bending has been the cause of every major war and conflict in human history..” which is what people say about religion today – theseeingeyenerd

Alright, here’s some more indisputable evidence why Tenzin is Amon. First, Tenzin wears the mask to cover his arrow, but do you ever see the back of “Amon’s” hands? No! They’re covered. Why does Tenzin tell Korra she can’t come to Republic City at? To goad her into coming without putting the blame on himself. How does he get the funds to run a revolution? He’s a member of the city council! And who would the spirits trust with energybending more than Aang’s son; as Korra said, he’s Mr Spiritual! – laserswords

In all the theorizing about Amon, it seems like something is getting lost. Mako and Bolin’s story in this episode seems meticulously designed to show us that Amon’s demagoguery about bending is an oversimplification of broader systemic failures. Just being a bender doesn’t make you immune to street violence, poverty, and exploitation. Do we know if Butaka is a bender or not? The boys exist in something akin to debt peonage to him, and if he’s a non-bender, that would muddy the waters further. – ekphrases

I’m with you that the spirits are probably at play here. It’s a strong possibility that Amon doesn’t buy into his own rhetoric and that it’s just propaganda, but maybe he really WAS contacted by a spirit that fed him these (most likely) lies in order to manipulate him to its will. It isn’t far-fetched to assume that perhaps a spirit is making a power-play of some sort here. – slightlypsychicparade

I enjoy your theories of what is to be on the show but I don’t think Korra and Amon would became allies even reluctantly. (not saying it can’t happen and Korra would probably try if the need arouse) see Korra is every thing Amon stands against. most likely would not want or feel that he doesn’t her help, need which i feel may be what leads to his downfall. But more importantly they are antitheses. While there goals seem similar, they are very different. See besides Korra being more physical and Amon more spiritual, but they are not just Characters(really cool one) but representations of Ideals. Such as Korra as “Balance” and Amon as “Order”,”freedom” vs.”equality”, and etc. See I my mind Korra greatest treat is not the Equalist and Amon the people but the Movement itself. Also Amon is just disfigured, he is like V from V for Vendentta.dakotaissorandom

I think it would also make sense if Amon was a descendent of Azula. We do not know what happened to Azula, and she would know about the ability to take away someone’s bending. She would also be very motivated to find a way to take the avatar’s bending away, and Amon’s movements reminded me heavily of the way Azula moved. Obviously, it’s just another theory. – Anonymous

Hello! So my sister and I have this weird theory that Amon could also be the Avatar. Like, he can have the spirituality while Korra has the physicality. Because 1. The spirits choose who to balance the world, and maybe two POV’s are needed for balance, 2. He can take away the ability to bend, something only the Avatar can do, and 3. Korra has always had a hard time connecting to the spirit world. Do you think this possible? thanks! – Anonymous

I’m going to throw this out there; in the end of ATLA we saw the chi-blocker Ty-Lee with the Kyoshi warriors. All were non-benders. Amon’s mask, though it might not be intentional, does look like a variation of the Kyoshi Warriors face painting. What do you think about the possibility of this group separating and shifting into this extremist group? Or the possibility of Amon being a descendant of a member of this group? – Anonymous

Hi! I’m sorry to ask this and I know that you have to be really busy people. But I love your podcasts and I have some problems to understand them because english is like my 3rd language, so could you please write them down or something, I would totally understand if you couldn’t and I will still replay them like 5 times if necessary beacuse they are really interesting but, I don’t know I had to ask Loving your work! <3

also from Anonymous:

Are you really going to read everything in the askbox? Wow you are brave, but thank u for that 🙂 Well I have a suggestion, I’m from Venezuela and listening the podcasts isn’t easy to me, please make a written post about what you say so international fans have it easier to understand you! ”

This tears at my fan heart, because what’s being asked for here is a transcription of the episode and at this time, that’s not something we’re able to provide. We’d love to, but we try to get the podcast out the same day the episode airs so all the fans watching and transcription…well, it’s a pain.

There are services that would do this for us as we work answering your questions and running the podcast proper, but that would require money, which we don’t have.

Right now, we’re getting quoted at about $1 to $1.50 (US) per audio minute for the kind of turnaround that’s being asked for above and that’s a good $40/episode average on top of the hosting we’re already covering because we’re fans and the man hours…ooof.

I’m not saying this is completely out of the realm of possibility, and I encourage our international fans to stick with it, but for right now, we’re gunning to be current during the approx 11 weeks of Korra’s broadcast, and that means not a lot of time for transcriptions.

UGH. But I feel so bad about it. Thank you so much for listening!

Street Earth Bending: Toph style verus Bolin style.

[NOTE: This is fan art. It’s really good fan art, but I found it here and have no indication this is Adult Toph from the series in a official way. But COME ON, it’s totally a hot adult Toph]

Here is Tumblr user biteinsane ’s breakdown of Toph Vs. Bolin’s Earthbending Style:

I have seen this around tumblr and maybe I because I only skimmed through most of them but I think there should be a say from someone who trained in the martial arts very similar to the martial arts modeled for earthbending. When someone who actually trained in real said martial art tells me otherwise, this is my two cents. This might also be a long two cents.

I was trained in Tang Soo Do, a South Korean martial arts, since I was 8 and quit when I was 18. In this martial arts, you have to be stable on the ground and yet be able to flow very easily like a snake. You need to move in and out with your hands and feet to stay on the ground. This is obviously what Toph does being a blind earthbender who uses her feet to “see” everything around her which makes sense.

This is traditional earthbending.

But even traditional has its moments.

Not only is there a good chance Bolin was never really trained under an earthbender, but he was trained in the streets. I have read these parts of people’s arguments and I agree. Bolin was possibly trained by Mako or with Mako and their styles are very similar when you watch them bend in the probending. What people fail to realize is that Bolin is still very close to the earthbending’s “true” form.

If you were fighting Bolin, one on one, you probably couldn’t knock him down because even being light on your feet doesn’t mean you will be blown away by a gust of wind. My own experiences come into play here. Not to brag, but the fighting part of tournaments was my favorite and easiest part of them for me as a child. I had energy that many people couldn’t keep up with. I jumped around when I fought, I was light on my feet, but my feet were still ON THE GROUND which is an important part to the martial arts I was trained in. This is also based off the fighting stance I brought up on which has both feet on the ground yet because one foot holds all weight the other can be used without a second thought. Example:

(Sorry, had to use iphoto in a darkish room while wearing darkish clothes. Also I like don’t wear shoes, but we never did in karate either.)
As you can kind of see there is on foot that it completely on the ground when the other is on the ball of the foot so if you try and take out my foot, it won’t work. I’ll still be solid on the ground and in perfect balance. That is also the foot I use to attack and I can switch footing as well since I like to kick with my left foot. The power comes from the heel and the top of the foot when kicking.
Here’s examples of Bolin fighting that I screencapped that will help you understand:

Bolin is the same way. His feet are on the ground. They are off the ground when he kicks and when he needs to move fast to avoid getting hit. The earthbending style is not only standing your ground but also being able to flow like a snake to get out of tough situations. He is light on his feet enough to move fast but balanced enough to stay fully on the ground when he lands. So he is using an earthbending style similar to Toph’s but mixed with streetfighting.

And this is only looking at his feet. I won’t talk about his arms and fists in this one. Unless someone wants me too or that comes up.

Thank you for reading. There are probably so many grammar and spelling mistakes. If you think I missed anything worth talking about tell me and I’ll add it.

From anonymous:

Why have the more specialized arts of bending been completely blown out of proportion in this later world? It required years of mastery and training to learn skills like metal-, blood-, and lightning-bending in ALTA, but in LoK, there a great groups of lighting-benders, and an entire police force of metal-benders. I feel like greatness has been completely devalued in this new series. Plus, the characters seem to tire much easier than in ATLA. Reference the pro-bending matches for proof. How sad.”

Confessed by dreamofneverland.

Do you guys ship a specific ship in LoK, or are y’all holding romantic skepticism for now? Also, since Bryke confirmed the “cheesy teenage romance” for the show (as we’ve already seen some of this with Korra and Mako), and as Bryke also confirmed some subsequent love triangle, who do y’all think will be involved in it?

I’d be pretty surprised if Bolin doesn’t make a run for Korra’s affections. He’ll likely lose out, but he’s a teenager too, gosh darnit! He has hormones!

Also, in Chapter 2, Mako kids Bolin about bringing another one of his girls into their pro-bending pre-staging area, implying that Bolin has at least some game (and Bolin has Pabu, and having cute animals is the same thing as having game most of the time).

I think it will be a Bolin/Korra/Mako love triangle, but I think it will be quick, messy and not draw itself out over too many episodes. You know, like real teen Who-Likes-Who kerfuffles.

We got a good anonymous comment that I’ll add here:

“If you consider the age difference with Korra and Mako with Aang and Katara, it’s not that surprising that they’re moving faster. They’re young adults, not pre-teens.”

Yes. Maturity all around (Except for Howrra’s). : )

[NOTE: This post has been edited]

This excerpted from an e-mail from listener Karina S:

and i really like how this show is not ‘kiddy’ anymore 🙂 the first series wasn’t even kiddy to begin with(more like pre-teen) but this new series can have a 16 and up rating :)) [seriously, even the original fans are older so i guess they won’t mind]

aaaaaand i am a MAKORRA shipper. makorra all the way :)) and have you heard of H.O.W.L.?? A pairing between korra and a Hot Order of the White Lotus guyhas been circulating around tumblr since the release of ep1&2 :)) but you gotta ask the tumblrfolk about it because i have no idea where it came from :)))

If you decide to peek into the HOWL/HOWRRA madness, here’s the link to the Tumblr tag
-Da7e-

Why do you think that firebending is absent but waterbending isnt? Because I only have see 4 waterbenders in Republic City and that was Hasook, Korra, and two gangsters. Because the united kingdom seems to be more of Earth and Fire mix in. I dont really see that much of the water tribe culture compare to the other cultures.

Yeah, there’s some Water missing from the greater Republic City thus far. At least the city isn’t as balanced as we expected.

I’d like to see The Red Monsoons do something crazy, but more likely we’ll get some more Water tribe this Saturday. Councilman Tarrlok, if his appearance in the Nick.com “Welcome to Republic City” game is any indication, hails from the Water tribe.

-Da7e-

I refuse to pick a favorite. Luckily, I don’t have to.

Fan Theories: Chakra Khan, Let Us Rock You

This multi-faceted theory came to us from an anonymous Tumblr user.

Previously we discussed Chakras as it pertains to energy bending, the difference in Amon’s skill and what we’ve seen before and – of course – Amon’s Revelation.

Okay. Remember how Aang had to unlock all of his chakras in order to gain the power to control the Avatar state? He made it all the way until the last chakra, the chakra that he couldn’t open because of his earthly attachment to Katara, yeah? It’s the Though Chakra, Sahasrara, the chakra of pure cosmic energy. Sahasrara is located at the crown of the head. The same place Amon uses to take away people’s bending “permanently” in episode 3.

Let’s get back to Aang for a second.

He couldn’t unlock that last chakra, and so he was unable to enter the Avatar state for a very, very long time. He needed to let go of his earthly attachment to Katara in order to be able to enter the Avatar state. Something that was incredibly difficult for him to do. Amon knows something about chakras, and how they all affect benders and normal people.

Since the individuals Amon has dealt with so far (thugs who love money) are unable to give up worldly possessions (money and power!), they are unable to unlock the Thought Chakra and bring back their bending.

And now we tie Korra into this beauty!

Korra sucks at spiritual things. So she could never know about the 7 chakras (heck, she didn’t even know that she lost her bending temporarily because her chi was blocked) Korra being able to airbend, and her being able to connect to the spirits is incredibly important. More important than we think.I think that if Korra is able to get in touch with her spiritual self, then she will be able to see past the facade of bending being taken away “permanently” and will be able to help some individuals get their bending back.

We’re #2! We’re #2!

First off, we’d like to thank you for shooting Republic City Dispatch into the #2 spot on iTunes Film & TV podcast chart after less than a week of being there. We’re coming, Pop Culture Happy Hour!

Subscribe to and review us on iTunes HERE.

Second:

LET US ALL BE FRIENDS!

We’ve been loving your responses/comments/questions and have been receiving a bit more than we were expecting (we can HANDLE it, we just weren’t expecting it).

You can submit questions to us via Tumblr or e-mail.

As you all reveal your inner genius, I promise we will read everything, we will publish theories, comments, questions, freakouts, art, links and suggestions on the blog if we think they contribute to the greater discussion of Korra and the world of Avatar.

What we won’t respond to are anonymous comments like this:

I don’t exactly have any questions. But I do have some things I’d like to say. I love listening to the podcast, but I feel like I HAVE to correct some things that you said. Amon’s name is pronounced like a Jamaican guy saying “A man” (A mon) and not like “A moan”. Also, I bunch of people died in Airbender. Commander Zhao, Princess Yue, Combustion-man, and we also saw Roku and Katara’s mom die in flashbacks). And lastly, I don’t know which one of you called Aang, “Ong,” but that is unforgivable.

Your corrections and Getting-Mads-At will be read, and be assured that we all have great shame when we’re listening to the episode and hear someone pronounce something wrong or represent something wrong. Also, if you’re right and we’re in the position to correct it (like yesterday’s brief fiasco when Da7e got Iroh’s son’s name wrong with the best intentions), we will.

We’re getting it: a woman podcaster, exclusives, correct pronunciations. We really, really, really want to be part of your cool kids club, and are taking it very seriously.

We just can’t respond to criticism left anonymously and still get anything done.

Everyone who has submitted thus far has done it completely right, our inbox is brimming with great theories from the wild (“Tenzin is Amon!” to the likely “I want Korra and Aang to meet in The Avatar State”) and interacting has been so much fun.

Amon’s idea is to remove bending to make everyone equal. If that happens, what do you think the aftermath would be? I don’t think Original Nonbenders would treat them fairly.

That’s true from a human standpoint, I think.

I’m not sure Korra would go there, BUT if you want to see what happens when things that used to be special suddenly aren’t special anymore, I’d recommend blowing through the Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 8 run of comics that follow what happens after there are hundreds of slayers instead of just one.

I don’t think we’re looking at a “end of the world as we know it” reality in LoK. Then, again, I wasn’t expecting so much of Ba Sing Se to get burned at the end of Book 3, so what do I know?

-Da7e-

Energy Bending: A Comparison

Q: Are you aware of the “Feathered Hat Man” being a background character who has shown up in the 3 episodes of Korra so far 🙂 He’s kind of like the “Where’s Waldo” of Korra, perhaps his reoccurring role so far could mean that he could be an important character later on in the series?

A: We are aware, but foreverkorra has been doing such a good job of tracking this anomaly, we hadn’t jumped on it yet.
