Mulan’s “Make a Man Out Of You” parody for Legend of Korra.

Man, I am loving these song parodies. Mulan was missing the word “douché” in it’s lyrics.

destr0y-something-beautiful:

Thought I would share this with the fandom. I think you guys would really like this. So just watch it and don’t question it.

I could be wrong but I think Bill will like it too, thus the tag.

At this point, someone has to be making legit Mac icons, right?

Legend of Korra mini pin-ups by ~yume-darling

In regards to possibly killing off one of the main characters: I believe it was Emily from the AV Club who said they wouldn’t do it because it is on Nickelodeon. Do any of you guys know how this show (or shows in general) are pitched? What I mean is, did Bryke have to come up with the whole story before Nick gave them the green light, or would it have been just more like an idea (which then Nickelodeon would have final censorship privileges if they didn’t like what eventually was created)?

This is the best way this question has been phrased, and it poses some interesting questions itself. I seem to remember the order from Nick on A:TLA was a bigger, Lord of the Rings style epic with an anime style. It seemed like a chance Nickelodeon took, since nothing else they’ve deemed a success has been remotely like Avatar.

I’d guess it was a way to compete with other channels like Cartoon Network that was porting over Anime in programming blocks.

Then, Avatar got big and budgets increased to the point where the Sozin’s Comet conclusion is, in essence, a film and was aired as such.

A few years later, Korra is announced as a mini-series, then later gets extended into Book Two.

I’d guess that Nickelodeon got a few episodes of Korra back (maybe up to The Spirit of Competition? But that’s a total shot-in-the-dark guess. At least the first two since Nick had those ready-to-release as soon as Korra got a certain number of social networking likes) and realized the quality could be extended.

And to a certain extent, this has paid off. Korra has been beating Primetime shows in it’s target demographic and I’m pretty sure that makes it the best thing Nick has going. Nickelodeon is under tons of pressure this year for not pulling it’s weight in the Viacom family.

I don’t mean to call Emily out or anything, but Korra can totally kill a character. You can’t blow someone’s brains out the back of their head, but of course kids can deal with death, as a matter of fact, some of the most memorable family entertainment of all time has been about death, namely Disney entertainment. Bambi? The Lion King? The natural inclination to kill the bad guy at the end of the movie? They stab Ursula in the stomach with a wooden shiv in the end of The Little Mermaid!

The argument that a character might die is based more in the kind of story Matt, Devindra and I think that we’re seeing. It would have to be a really sloppily handled death for Nickelodeon to pull it for censorship reasons.

And I think the show is written well enough that someone could die. Aang never had killing in him, but Aang was younger than Korra when we were spending time with him.

I dunno – taking people’s bending away is a death equivalent for sure and they’re making that look super-frightening in the series thus far.

I keep thinking back to Leaves From The Vine. That song is about reacting to death, it’s about loss, it’s from the first series.

And it’s beautiful, regardless of how old some marketing executive thinks the target audience is.

This would be a good point to re-iterate that, yes, I do work for Viacom, but all this information came from public sources and I do not speak for Viacom or any of it’s subsidiaries when I’m talkin’ ‘bout Korra. : )

Episode 8 Clip!

Looks legit, but I can’t find the Nick source. Split into two parts, unfortunately.

HERE’s the official clip on Nick.com, still unable to embed.

Well, I guess we know who is on Team Avatar now, huh? : )

I’m not in the habit of calling people out, but these are links to one person’s Korra Nation fan point system thingy. Whomever this user is is trying to game you for points so they can get Korra prizes.

I’m sure it’s valid by the rules, but I’ve seen the reaction of people who feel this is spammy and I thought I’d let you know what the deal was.

-Da7e-

Oh man. This is crazy interesting.

ink-strokes:

1 down, 3 to go.

Well, at least, I don’t think it’s just one weapon drawn in different perspectives. I’m not an artist so I’m not sure. But if there are four types of those machines, that would be one crazy war.

For all your official needs (and confirmation we have a new episode on Saturday!)

bryankonietzko:

Yeah, I know. This photo is stupid. Ironic B-boy posturing is rarely amusing to me, but I came back from color correction to find the studio empty, closed early for Memorial Day weekend. I put this hat on Kevin Coppa’s puppet, and one thing led to another…

RANDOM END-OF-THE-WEEK MUSINGS

–Sorry, it is true that there is no new episode airing this weekend. But a new Korra will be on next Saturday, June 2nd. And it’s a doozy. A REAL DOOZY. In the meantime, Nick.com wanted me to let you all know they made a playlist where you can watch the first seven episodes online, in case you need to catch up, or convert friends, family, babysitters, family pets, etc. Here’s the link: http://at.nick.com/Lv4P9O

–As some of you may know, Korra has been the number one show with teen audiences in the U.S. for some of these first seven episodes. As previously mentioned, I don’t put too much stock in ratings, but this is mind-blowing to me. How is a Saturday morning “cartoon” beating out prime time network shows like American Idol, Glee, The Voice, and Family Guy with teen audiences? We’re all surprised, honored, and baffled. My guess is that the 12-year-olds who were growing up on Avatar are now 16-year-olds, and Korra has sort of aged up right along with them. Whatever the reason, thanks!

–Mike and I love you guys, but we don’t take requests. We make the best show we can, telling the stories we want to tell, and then we put it out there in the world. By the time you guys see it and have “all the feels” and/or get all mad at stuff, we are working on something far, far ahead of that. It may not always go the way you want it to, but at least it is honest art, straight from our hearts. And a lot of these reactions may turn out to be knee-jerk ones in the long run, once you see where the stories and characters go. I’d rather do that than make some watered down “design by committee” thing that attempted to please everyone. If it were up to the majority of the audience, we’d probably have a show where Tahno and the Cabbage Merchant play beach games on Ember Island for 500 episodes… In short, as you guys say, I REGRET NOTHING.

This is funny, but it never happened. I’m vegan.

–And lastly, my favorite quote from Mike this week, commenting on a cool, momentous shot from the Book 1 finale, addressing the whole fandom: “GIF that and put it on yer Tumblr.” HA!

Have a great, long weekend!

Love,

Far-from-perfect-Bryan

EDIT: The Avatar finale aired in 2008, and Korra premiered in 2012. 4 years. 12 + 4 = 16. That’s what I meant. Christie, my assistant designer, was 18 when the finale aired. And now she is 22, and she works on Korra. And she is an awesome artist. Man, that makes me (and many others on the crew) feel old!

Don’t you think that the Internet has also allowed ANYONE to become a critic? This is frustrating, I think, because people are extremely judgmental and many don’t stop to think before they speak. A good critic should be more perceiving and open minded like you guys mentioned; perhaps, wait until they have the whole picture. Loved the show this week! Can’t wait for next week! :) (As for Pabu VS Naga, I say Naga!)

I haven’t done this before and don’t want to make a habit out of it, BUT – on the other weekly podcast Matt Patches and I do, we discussed the upcoming Kevin Smith Hulu show “Spoilers” which claims to NOT be criticism but instead 50 everyday people fan-boying out over flicks.

It’s 47 minutes into THIS EPISODE and touches a bit on what you’re saying here.

We also review Moonrise Kingdom, talk about Community, Twitter, The Master and Patches goes all soft for Anime Blu Rays like he did on RCD.

-Da7e-

1. The mechs looked like they were heavily aided by 3D modeling, so that’s why they look different when they’re moving and their lines aren’t as solid during rotations.

2. I don’t think the Airbending kids will be part of the “Krew.” I think Pema will have her baby at the most convenient plot moment, which would likely be after someone dies. (Death, new life, you know circle of life, SIIIIIIMMMMBBBBAAAAAA)

3. Yup.

4. Nope.

5. I’d guess in the episode titled “Skeletons In The Closet”

6. While Devindra thinks Bolin is doomed, I think it makes more sense to kill Asami.

-Da7e-

I love your recaps so much guys! But I have one question, why don’t you guys have girl hosts?? I would love to hear a girls opinion in these podcasts about Korra things. I would be willing to do it, but I lack the humor you guys bring to the show :P – mooseandpeaches

Well, we had Emily from the AV Club replace me for the “And The Winner Is…" episode.

It’s not like we have a He-Man Women-Haters club, and I think we did pretty good as three dudes both talking about and recognizing our limitations in the shippy "The Spirit of Competition”

Whatever humor we’re using does not come from our genitals, so I don’t know how to help you in that regard.

I think adding in a woman every once in awhile is good for us, but I know for a fact all three of us are very cognizant that we are guys and the male gaze, while inescapable for us, is constantly in effect.

Here’s Korra as a man from cabout :

-Da7e-

I’ve noticed you’ve been calling Naga a boy when in fact Naga is a female, noted whenever Korra calls her “girl”.

YEAH PATCHES! : )

I almost corrected him ON the podcast, but why deprive you all of nitpicking?

That makes two boys, two girls, one boy animal and one girl animal.

TEAM KORRA!

korra krew! by *chiou

If they do another series I want them to goto the past. Do a series on a past avatar. The mech suits in the Korra series are already my worst fears for this one (please no future. Avatar should never go full Digimon). And Ive been thinking they’ve been hinting at Aang taking away his Avatar state so that’s Korra hasn’t done it yet.

I think we’ve been in the past for a good three books, and between The Promise comics and what I increasingly think will be an episode almost entirely of flashbacks somewhere in this season of Korra.

But I don’t think this series will go “full Digimon.” One of the best things about how Korra has evolved thus far is it’s greatly based on the rules established in A:TLA. It’s a natural extension of the world, and even if Big Daddy looking mechs are a little jarring, I don’t think they’re more of a stretch than something like The Drill from 70 years before.

I trust the world-building, and if A:TLA was ancient and this is industrialized, I’d love to see what “Modern” is in this world. But maybe there’s no place for The Avatar in modernity.

DON’T TEARBEND!

Republic City Dispatch Bonus Episode is coming TOMORROW (Sunday).

Da7e, Sorry, I didn’t mean for my last comment to sound like I was griping or nitpicking about the site…which is exactly how it came across. That was my bad. I did notice as I stopped by the site that the frames were gone, so thanks for that, however it was achieved. Once again, sorry for sounding much more abrasive than I intended. You guys have a great site. Also, is there any update from Nickelodeon about when the next episode will air? Thanks again, Scott from Colorado Springs.

Hey, Scott!

No problem, buddy. You also kicked off someone suggesting we take donations…which… we now have to think about.

And also someone suggested I just re-write the CSS from scratch…yeah, that’s not gonna happen. : )

I will do my best to make this site the most usable it can be through the run of Book One: Air. There will be an off season before the next run of Korra episodes (hopefully not a lengthy one), but if I get time to make different posts go up with the symbols of different nations (Flame icon for video!), it would probably NOT be while the show is running.

I hear you Scott (YAY COLORADO), and I hear those of you who are web-inclined enough to know just how much work I am or am not avoiding.

Also – although we’re not CURRENTLY accepting donations, I would gladly accept a custom-designed website. Or, you know, pictures of the three of us as a pro-bending team…or someone can ship me…hopefully with a girl character, but I’m easy. : )

That was all light joking.

(by scarletsapphires)

BUT – HERE IS YOUR COMMENTS ASSIGNMENT!

Link me to your favorite Avatar site (not Nick.com related and NOT the Avatar Wika). I was going to make a post of good ones, but keep getting distracted by things like: “Take those frames off your site!”

: )

-Da7e-

What are you guys going to talk about for this week’s podcast if there’s going to be one?

Hello!

You might have noticed the site has mostly been about how the CSS has been working for the past two days.

And it pains me, because I heart and miss all you of “The Fandom” whenever I have to go do other things (like a new 16 & Pregnant this Tuesday at 10PM on MTV).

HOWEVER – this has been very deliberate.

THERE WILL BE A REPUBLIC CITY DISPATCH THIS WEEK.

We have been saving up your e-mails, sorting through all 250 unaddressed Tumblr asks and combing through the comments to pick out what issues/theories keep coming up.

Also, we’ll do a quick review of what we’ve talked about this season and address some things we’ve left hanging.

Right now, all I can promise you is that we’ll loop back around to the question of Asami’s character development and I doubt we’ll be able to talk about the future without debating when/how/if we’ll get to see The Avatar State.

Other than that, we’re just calling it a “BONUS EPISODE.”

Fret not! This doesn’t mean a guest or guests aren’t coming in the future, it just means that we opened ourselves up to a lot of feedback and now we’re going to address that feedback.

And isn’t “The Promise Part 2” out?

That’s a real question. Do I need to stop by the comic book store tonight?

Keep it coming, folks, we’re watching!

So I met a businessman from Japan legit named “Sato” yesterday.

Safe to say I will be pronouncing that name more correctly in the future.

Thanks, Real Sato.

-Da7e-

Da7e, Just wanted to chime in on the theme(tumblr). I prefer the older theme for layout and looks but this one largely isn’t bad. One thing, I think that the gilded frames that the layout puts around every picture looks terrible. Is there a way to fix this without changing the entire theme? I understand that the change was not without reason, but the gilded frames are an eyesore. Anyway, thanks for the great work and passion! Sincerely, Scott from Colorado Springs.

Whew.

Ok.

I have no way of telling if you, Scott, are the same person who has previously mentioned not liking the frames.

Here’s the deal: Tumblr themes that you can customize easily cost money, we don’t have money to spend, so everyone that says “I liked the old theme because it was like the show’s design sort of” or “I don’t like this new theme because it has nothing to do with the show:” Yeah, it’d be cool if this was a custom Tumblr site.

That would be cool and most cool things cost money, as is the way of the world.

That being said, I’m a pretty talented fella in the understanding CSS department, and I’m going to spend a bit trying to fix this frame issue.

I’d love to be able to address everyone’s design quibbles, but unless someone wants to give me $100 to buy a Tumblr theme and mod it myself, I’m ONLY gunning for features we can use to talk to each other.

Sorry about this longer, not-Korra post, but we’re prepping this week’s episode, so my apparent absence is actually a slow formation of format.

Alliteration!

-Da7e-

I guess it’s Red Scarf Day (Facebook – link)?

I was unaware.

-Da7e-

This picture by goingcrazyhere made me all confused. Then I read the caption. Total win:

A doodle I did in class a few weeks back.
Korra is trying to teach Bolin so traditional earthbending. But he hasnt gotten the hang of it yet even though his body is built for it.
Mako arrives and sees them in a “poop” stance…ya.

Ohh! korra-scenery is an awesome Tumblr!

Silk Road Bridge looks like half Golden Gate (San Francisco) and half Brooklyn (NYC). Which makes it 100% beautiful to me.

Silk Road Bridge

Location: Silk Road Bridge, Republic City, The United Republic

I’m pretty sure this is the official “This is Amon’s secret base” posters we saw from “The Aftermath.”

Ratings!

Episode 7 – “The Aftermath” 3.452 million; .89 adults 18-49 rating

PREVIOUSLY:

Episode 6 – ”And The Winner Is…” 3.876 million viewers and a .91 adults 18-49 rating.

Episode 5 “The Spirit of Competition”  – 3.784 million viewers, 0.95 A18-49 (#1 on the network for the day)

Episode 4 –4.079 million viewers, 1.13 A18-49 (#1 on the network for the day)

Episode 3 –  3.546 million viewers, 0.91 A18-49 (#1 on the network for the day)

Episode 1&2 – 4.5 million overall, 5.7/1.2 million K6-11 (+36%), 6.3/1.3 million T9-14 (+125%) and 5.5/1.9 million K2-11 (+17%)

Where can I find a complete list of Season 1 episodes?

Of Korra?

Right now, that doesn’t exist. New episode titles are released the week before usually. We update out Episode page accordingly.
