Happy Summer Solstice!!! (sorry its a day late)

That’s okay! It’s still happy!

-Da7e-

I’ve just been rewatching ATLA, and noticed a few things. Aren’t the “basic” 4 bending elements just states of matter? Earth = Solid, Water = Liquid, Air = Gas, Fire = Plasma? Also, doesn’t it make more sense if Amon is just blocking the 6th(?) chakra, the one on the forehead, and not the actual taking-away-bending, with the huge light show? Just wondering.

It would make more sense if he’s just blocking a chakra. And maybe that’s what it will end up being. On the other hand, didn’t Tahno say he’d been to every healer in Republic City? Did everyone forget about chakras, or is what Amon doing more like energy bending?

Hopefully we’re close to some answers.

-Da7e-

is korra realy going to defeat amon in the season fanily already?! what are they going to do with amon out of the picture? I want to see more amon next season!!!!!!!!!

Someone said to me (maybe here) that Amon is only in this season. Which kind of makes me sad, because he’s kind of growing on me too. At least until I know more of his eeeeeeevil plan.

Keep up the good work. I like many of the theories about what the message of the flashback is, how energy bending works, blood bending defense, Tarlock’s father, etc. However what if it is as simple as Aang trying to give Korra the same advice Roku gave him in the beginning, the avatar state is a defense mechanism, and that it can be automatic? I do not think Aang had full control while he was being a marionette. What are your thoughts on this over simple interpation

I like the idea of the Avatar State being an automatic protection device, but it also seemed like A:TLA suggested it could be triggered by being hyper-emotional (specifically, I just re-watched The Ember Island Players and Aang metions being so upset he should be in the Avatar State).

It seems like Korra is pretty emotionally volatile, but hasn’t entered the Avatar State that we know of (but hasn’t really been that close to death either).

Aang was able to Avatar State pretty early on despite not having mastered all four elements OR his chakras. He may not have been able to control it, but he was able to do it. Korra seems incapable.

But, if you had to ask me, the flashbacks were saying SOMETHING about the Avatar State or Eneergy Bending and we only got the surface message.

The Avatar State by ~WayT0Dawn

So I thought airbenders were supposed to have grey eyes, but I guess not if Jinora has brown eyes and baby Rohan has green eyes….

Yeah the eye to power connection hasn’t been working out so well. Which I’m fine with. It’d be no fun if you were constantly depending on people’s eyes to discover their powers.

Green eyes, though, that sounds serious.

-Da7e-

I’m not mad at Mako, I’m disappointed in the storytelling around his character. Everyone should have been as concerned about Korra as Mako was. And the whole “love triangle” seems hamfisted. Especially seeing as Mako simply just telling Asami that he chose her over Korra would solve pretty much everything. Also…a kiss is not cheating! Blegh.

I agree that the love triangle feels a little hamfisted, but I’d rather it be hamfisted and present than dominating.

That being said, I don’t think Mako has chosen Asami over Korra, I don’t think Mako has decided much at all. And why do we need him too? Republic City is at war!

Don’t worry, everyone, I have a feeling that Mako’s dating choices will be simplified in the next 3 episodes of Korra. Even if that third episode is over a year from now.

So just out of curiosity what do y’all think of all the hate the character Mako is getting?

I know not to get involved in spirited fan debates that somehow turn into battles about the intimate thoughts of characters that are part of a larger narrative mostly uninterested in the intimate thoughts of those characters.

Mako’s in a pinch, he just tried to do the right thing by his brother and himself. Sure he was a dick about it, but – guys – we have such a proclivity for being dicks in that age group.

Hormones and being a teenager are horrible, horrible things. Perhaps this is something some of you are dealing with right now.

If I held other people responsible for fictional character’s actions, I’d be pretty pissed at any blonde-haired, blue-eyed Lannister looking folk. I’d confuse Christina Hendricks with Joan and get mad at her IRL husband for letting her prostitute herself, I’d have been against Zuko for not believing Peter Pan had really come back to save his children from Captain Hook.

Passions running high means that the series is connecting with people, which is a good sign. I just suggest paying very close attention to what our individual output is into the world. Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, these things are isolating because we’re sitting in front of a screen broadcasting our thoughts. BUT – they are communities and wishing death/harm upon a character or those character’s supporters because of something that’s NOT in the show is critically irresponsible and morally reprehensible.

I’m not a sports fan, but I posit a lot of sports fans know what the appropriate line is. I’ve been in many a stadium and a few bars where people that are enemies while they’re enjoying their sport find a love/hate mid-ground that manages to find commonality in something, even if that something is mutual dislike of a third party.

That was a bunch of long sentences. Let’s just all agree while Kim Kardashian is out there being a waste of human genetic material and failing to contribute to society as a whole, there are more important things to champion than valid interpretations of a piece of art we all love and love to discuss.

So I’m beginning to think that the flashbacks Korra was having meant more than Tarlock is Yukone’s son. I think he may have been trying to tell her that the only way to permanently take away bending is from the front, and since Amon does it from the back it is only temporary or not the complete form.

I agree that we were supposed to learn something different. If it’s backwards vs forwards Energy Bending, well, I guess I’d be okay with that. But I want more.

I can’t help but think we were actually supposed to learn something about The Avatar State and how it’s resistant to bloodbending. But who knows. GAH!

Come on Saturday, get here faster!

You guys are lovely. While plenty of my friends watch Korra, there is a dearth of thoughtful Korra discussion in my life, which you folks so graciously provide. Are you still planning on doing updates after the finale with The Promise? Will RCD start a book club?

We’re currently discussing amongst ourselves what we’ll be doing during the off-season and flailing like a man losing his cabbages trying to get some semi-official attention.

We have some good ideas. I’ll write a little about them here if you don’t hold me to them. : )

There will be some review of Korra Book One, almost for sure. How we do that is up for debate. The Promise should be discussed, but the final part doesn’t come out until September, so who knows how multi-parted that conversation should be.

We’d love to do interviews, of course.

And there might even be some A:TLA love in there.

ALSO – I’m warning you now, expect a minor amount of fundraising. Soundcloud costs, if we want to update the site to be more functional, it will cost and anything we want to do above and beyond watching Nickelodeon will likely have small fees (that little arrow the podcast gets on your Tumblr Dashboard? That’s $2 a pop).

I promise it won’t be invasive, and we’re looking for a way to keep it out of the free podcast all together.

OVERALL, though, when we started this podcast, it was mostly a way to talk about Korra. Now, however, we’ve gotten a taste of your addicting fandom and I can’t imagine just giving up the level of engagement we’re getting.

If we get super lazy, we can just do whole podcasts like the Bonus episode where we cull our e-mails, tweets and Tumblr asks. They’ve started piling up into the 100s again. : )

Anyway. We’ll be around. We’re thinking about it. Stick with us after next Sunday.

Da7e, I can’t help it, but every time I listen to RCD, I can’t be help notice how handsome your voice is. There. I said it. Now pardon me while I go blush elsewhere.

Thanks!

I was wondering why everyone found Patches’ voice so alluring. We have alluring voices (work on that, Devindra).

Here’s my gift to our voice-crushers:
