Republic City Dispatch

From @inkasrain:

Strange and slightly unsettling theory that occured to me when you mentioned the world no longer needing an Avatar: What if it’s not that Korra isn’t the Avatar, but that she *is* and must choose not to be? What if Korra must allow herself to lose her bending, and learn that her power is not in mystical abilities, but in her own personality– and this is what makes her worthy of being a leader of benders and non-benders both? It does seem thematically apt, albeit terribly bittersweet.

Yes. I really like the storytelling complexities about what you’re saying. I don’t know that I (or anyone) know has enough hints from the four episodes already broadcast, but I’d be all in for this kind of twist.

Although I may not be too much on the “Korra is not the Avatar” Matt Patches theory train, I do think that Korra has to deal with something no other Avatar has had to deal with before, and that’s Republic City.

So, I think Aang changed something about being Avatar and we’ll spend this season figuring out what that is.

I’ll go with whatever theory tells me the best story! : )

-Da7e-

Wait. A PEBBLE? So you don’t need Chi-Blocking powers you just need to know that Chi-Blocking is possible?

What?

WHAT?!?!

dearmaridalia:

So i was looking through the Avatar wikia and found something interesting.

In the avatar wiki it says that Toph is dead, sadly. By the way love your show it makes me see how deep this show really is, it’s not like any other “kid” show out there.

Yes, the Avatar Wiki says Toph is dead, but when we looked into the interview that is sourced for this fact, the interview was outdated and erroneous. (POST HERE)

I’m not for blindly trusting the Wiki on this point, I’m looking for one of the show creators saying Toph is dead. Otherwise, we don’t really know.

Return of Melon Lord?

by *DarkKenjie

The point you guys were talking about Toph traveling the world and teaching metal bending to people is in The Promise. It’s really unknown as to if Toph is actually dead or not in Korra. We only know that Aang and Sokka have for sure passed away.

BING!

Oh, The Promise. (We did a post on where to get it HERE)

I’ll say that the whole thing is up on YouTube, but we as a podcast don’t support it, because you should go buy the few official A:TLA/KORRA products there are.

Good! Good to know Toph may not be dead. Keep scouring, fans! Someone had to say something. : )

-Da7e-

P.S. Also from YANK-76:

Also, I have to say I love your guys’ theory about chibending being an extension of airbending. My roommate and I looked at each other and started going through scenarios in AtLA and were like "THIS WOULD EXPLAIN SO MUCH!”. Although I have to ask if you think chibending and chi blocking are two different techniques, or if it’s like Iroh learning to redirect lightning from the waterbenders?“

I haven’t the foggiest what this series definition of Bending Vs. Blocking. I would assume they are opposite forces, just because the world needs to be in balance and if Korra is the Avatar, Amon represents the opposite (non-bender) but with the same goal (unity).

Korra airbended in ep 3 to spread the steam into the other room c:

Yes and no.

Yes, she bent steam, but steam is water particles in the air and Cloudbending, as we saw from the original series, is a combo specialization that both air and waterbenders can do.

The Wikia (which we trust, but occasionally doubt, so it’s far from the last word) classifies Cloudbending as a subset of Waterbending.

You mentioned in your 4th podcast that Toph was alive travelling the world teaching metal bending. This got my hopes, but then I searched it up and the Toph wikia page said that she unfortunately passed away sometime before 170 ASC. Anyways just putting that out there.

Well, here’s kicking off the big question of this week:

CAN SOMEONE SOURCE ME THE THING THAT SAYS TOPH IS DEAD?

The Avatar Wika page for her reads: “Toph passed away sometime before 170 ASC, but a statue now stands in her honor at Republic City’s police headquarters.[7]

But that little 7 that is supposed to link to the source leads to an interview with Andrea Romano, voice casting director, who only says a few lines about Korra, one of them being

_______________________________________________

Q: Will Aang in any way be in the series?

ANDREA ROMANO: I don’t know how much of the series I’m allowed to tell you, but that whole generation has died. It’s the next generation. So it’s really cool. It’s the same producers. It’s the same brilliant attention to detail and I’m very excited. Right now we are just making twelve of them and we’ll see what happens.

_______________________________________________

That interview was published August 2nd 2010 when they were only 3 episodes into creating the series and it’s the only source we have for Toph being dead?
So, I went back to the Comic Con transcript and there’s only this mention of Toph in the past tense from Michael:
Michael: So Toph, as you know, was a metal bender. She kind of like, travelled the world, started teaching people, earth benders, how to harness this ability. It’s still kind of a rare thing. Not every earth bender does metal bending but, we have these kind of, it’s the elites, kind of swat team of Republic City.“

A combo of the Comic Con panel and allusions to Toph’s activities in The Promise (Part One) was where Devindra was pulling from when he said Toph was traveling the world teaching metal bending in Episode 3 of the podcast (which is finally ready for you on iTunes by the way), but I can’t find anywhere that says Toph is actually dead.
Bring me official quotes of Toph’s dead-ness! Do they exist?

I have a feeling that the pro bending style will play a major role in the fight against chi blockers. Since the chi blockers rely on speed and accuracy to block people’s bending, it makes sense that benders would need a quick and agile style to combat it. I would like to know if you guys think this is plausible. This is just me being curious. Thanks for reading!

I think this is totally plausible. I’m not sure if “Pro-Bending” itself is diverse enough to be considered it’s own style, but if it is, it’s about standing your ground (territory based moves).

Here’s hoping that Pro Benders are also good at keeping their distance. Chi blockers need contact for their skill to work, so one would think staying away from the Equalists would work.

Then again, they’re all ninja-y so they’ll just rope you and pull you into the shadows anyway.

I’ve very excited to learn more about the Pro Bending culture over the next two episodes (I think it’s going to be 2).

Future Toph says: “Try Harder”

Hey RCD/Korra fans! Something went wonky with the corporate monolith that is the all important iTunes. We’re in the process of getting it fixed! Hopefully by around 4PM EST today, EPISODE 3 will be ready to automatically download to your iTunes.

If you CANNOT WAIT, click here to head to the Soundcloud page and click the downward facing arrow to download the MP3 and transfer it to your device.

Matt’s right, as much as I love answering the questions, we should try to keep the podcast on the front page as much as possible.

We’ll be back Monday geeking out over who is or isn’t The Avatar. : )

ENCORE PRESENTATION!

Little age progress thing I did over the span of three days (should’ve been one but I got emo because my tablet suddenly was causing problems)

I kind of like Asami so far even though I haven’t seen her in the show yet. :3

The Spirit of Competition – Saturday May 5th, 11AM on Nickelodeon!

bryankonietzko:

Here’s a snapshot of Benjamin Kaltenecker, our production manager and resident Mongoose bike enthusiast, in his office. The cardboard Mako cutout on his wall was drawn by Ryu and painted with glow-in-the-dark paints by the crew as part of the Halloween decorations in the Korra area.

I hope you guys enjoy/are enjoying/enjoyed watching episode 104 today. You get to meet some new, vital characters! Joaquim, Ryu, Mike, and I contributed a lot of storyboards to that one. It has a moody, psychological vibe that we all enjoy––not your typical “kids” fare.

the-sunbird:

I FIGURED IT OUT.

I figured out why I love Bolin and Korra’s relationship so much.

One word: BROMANCE.

Fear not, Makorra’s, yumiko27 has it figured out:

My sister and I were just discussing how Mako is totally not Zuko 2.0, but Katara 2.0.
Which means, with all the previous Avatars’ track records, Makorra is endgame!

Dear Johnnyish: Please keep posting your progress. This is awesome.

johnnyish:

Almost finished with the gloves for my fire ferret costume.

I’m not sure if it’s my iTunes, internet, or something connection problem, but for some reason I can’t download your latest podcast.

iTunes takes awhile to read that our episode is up, but we don’t want to delay getting it out, so it will appear streaming on Tumblr and Soundcloud first.

If you want to download the MP3 file to move to another device, you can click over to the Soundcloud Page for this episode and click the arrow that’s pointing down (that’s the download button) and the MP3 should come to you!

iTunes will refresh soon, though, so those of you subscribed will get auto-downloads today.

BE FOREWARNED – Discussion includes Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Promise (Part One), Nick.com’s “Welcome To Republic City” and Chapters 1-4 of The Legend of Korra.

Good Morning Benders and Non-Benders alike and welcome back to the Republic City Dispatch, a radio programme covering Nickelodeon’s Legend of Korra series.

This week, we’ll be covering Chapter 4 of Book One: Air “The Voice In The Night,” which aired Saturday April 28th. Is Republic City drawing closer to all out war? Can The Avatar master Airbending in time to unite the city her predecessor created?

Hosted by Devindra Hardawar of the /Filmcast and Da7e and Matt Patches of Operation Kino.

Did you get the idea the Satos are up to no good? (Did you pronoucne Sato correctly? Because we messed it up a few times) Is Patches crazy for doubting the Korra is the The Avatar? FUTURE AANG?

Let’s flash back to the official press materials for The Legend Of Korra to learn more about our new characters this week.

Hiroshi Sato (Male, non-bender)
A barrel-chested businessman with a big personality, Hiroshi Sato’s family lineage extends back to the first Fire Nation colonists.   He was born to a poor family from the Dragon Flats district.  A kid with big dreams, Hiroshi worked from a very young age to help support his family.  When he was 18, he convinced a wealthy banker to invest in the idea of automobiles for the common man.  Before long, he was churning out Satomobiles in his first Future Industries factory.  By the time he was 25, the ingenious industrialist had made his first million yuans.

Asami Sato (Female, non-bender)
As the daughter of Hiroshi Sato, Asami has lived a life of luxury but don’t let her fancy clothes and polite manners fool you – Asami has a tough side too.   She’s an expert driver and isn’t afraid to mix it up on the racetrack.  Asami has also had the best self-defense training money can buy.   She’s a big fan of Pro-bending and goes to every match.

We’re officially 1/3 of the way through The Legend Of Korra’s first book.

Ahhhhh! It’s going too quickly!

The Legend of Korra STARTS NOW on Nickelodeon!

Book One: Air

Chapter 4: “The Voice In The Night”

This is exactly how I felt discovering the shippers and crack shippers over the past week.

Original piece by “booter-freak”  HERE.

this doesnt really have to do with the show much but is it just me or do you think the theme song/ opening is really dumb. the first episode it was good because it explained everything but the other episodes just have a short opening and its dumb

I wouldn’t say “Dumb” because there are certainly dumber theme songs out there. I mean, I love the show itself, but have you heard the theme song for Avengers: Earth’s Mightest Heroes?

Ewww.

The Legend of Korra opening isn’t as dynamic as the first time through, but it’s a 12 episode miniseries, so I’m cutting it some slack. Not to mention that for a show that has Earth, Fire, Air and Water cartoon effects…well, it could have been worse.

I’ve had this conversation with people who are really into to different TV before: “What makes a good theme?”

My theory? If you can be humming it and someone else you don’t know can recognize it and connect with you on the share expereince d of watching the show, it’s a worhty theme song.

By this criteria, there’s only one theme song that has gotten me into conversations recently:

In response to a recent query, I wanted to recommend the weekly recaps on the AV Club. Not only are Emily’s reviews excellent, but the comments section is like a graduate seminar on Avatar. I post there as Pomplemousse. Hayden Childs also recently completed a set of “classic” reviews of Last Airbender, and both the reviews and comments are worth a look. The level of discourse is extremely high and the shipping is fun and free of invective.

Oh helllllloooo Pomplemousse!

You are correct, The Onion’s AV Club has some of the best and most consistent television criticism out there. I’ve been reading their recaps on most everything since about halfway through Lost.

I was Da7e for a hot 2 seconds on the AV Club/TV Club system, then I got the iPad app and the format of it was all weird, then I just went back to reading, silently, without commenting. Especially on Community comment threads which are insane.

Anyway! The Legend of Korra text reviews are HERE and are written by   Emily Guendelsberger

The Avatar: The Last Airbender re-watch and reviews are HERE and are written by Hayden Childs.

The A:TLA series of articles was great while it was coming out and I used a few of them as a way of getting people interested in the property after the movie: “Look! Real critics have real nice things to say!”

I’ve been reading Emily’s reviews in parallel with ours and where she says “X-Men” we say “Batman,” otherwise, we’re all four of us geniuses and you all are still schooling us in advanced Korra predictions!

AHHHH! Less than an hour! I’m psyched!

Love your podcast! For me, all your theorizing and discussing makes the show just that much more enjoyable; thanks so much. I noticed people asking for a good LoK resource and I’d like to recommend avatar wikia. It’s a wikipedia dedicated to all things Avatar Universe with every fact imaginable, common or obscure. The community also keeps very close tabs on such things as reviews and interviews. Hope this is helpful. Can’t wait for the next podcast!

Da-doi! I should have thought of that on day one!

Yes, Amanda is right, the best place to cross reference against anything A:TLA is http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Avatar_Wiki.

However: Wikis/Wikas sometimes take awhile before they have all the information on something new, like The Legend of Korra. There’s great content there about Korra now, and excellent fans update it quickly after each episode’s air, but since there hasn’t been a year or more of discussion about the show since the season has ended, all Korra facts are up for debate.

Friendly debate, of course! : )
