241 – Selena (with Luis Rendon!)

And we’re back! We hope you all enjoyed the 100 YEARS, 100… SNUBS! May miniseries, but regular episodes are returning and did we come back with a special one! The Mixed Reviews co-host and journalist Luis Rendon joins us to talk about one of the most beloved musical biopics of all time, 1997′s Selena. The film follows the rise and sudden tragic end of Tejano music legend Selena Quintanilla, and catapulted actress Jennifer Lopez in a major way. Lopez stayed in the conversation to earn a Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy nomination at the Globes, but the Oscars overlooked her now-treasured performance that is often remarked on for her ability to recreate the real life icon that she played.

This episode, we discuss the many phases on Jennifer Lopez’s career from her breakout in 1997 to her emergence into a music career and triumph at the Super Bowl Half Time Show with Shakira. We also discuss the massive casting search that landed her the role, the film as a tool of healing in the immediate aftermath of Selena’s murder, and the visual style of Tejano music videos brought to the film.

175 – Hustlers

This is an episode about control. We’ve tallied up the votes for our Listeners’ Choice episode and in a landslide victory, 2019′s Hustlers emerged quite victorious. One of our favorite films of 2019, the film (based on Jessica Pressler’s expose in The Cut) stars Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez as two exotic dancers who team up to drug and rob their wealthy Wall Street customers in the wake of the financial crisis. A highly fictionalized adaptation, the film is a nonstop ride of entertaining moments, all given an empathic treatment by writer/director Lorene Scafaria. Though we have much to say for the film’s many merits, its awards hopes hinged on a career-best Lopez in Supporting Actress, who ran the gauntlet of being nominated at every major precursor only to miss out on an Oscar nomination.

This episode, we discuss how the film’s subject matter was met with unfair indifference despite Scafaria’s thoughtful approach and the film’s surprise $100M box office success. We also dive into its stellar performances outside of Lopez, Scafaria’s directorial career, Lopez’s career from critical praise to romcom star, the film’s deftly handled morality, and “so wait a minute actresses.”

Class of 2019

With last week’s announcement of this year’s Academy Award nominees, we can now discuss the episode a year in the making (or, in the case of The Current War, several years): the This Had Oscar Buzz Class of 2019.

In keeping with last year’s tradition, we’ve broken the films up into several categories: The Cake Memorial Prize for happiest miss, The Justice for “Slaughter Race” Prize for saddest miss, The Dr. Louise Banks Award for most surprising shutout, the Unfinished Life Prize for most forgettable, the Angela’s Ashes technicality prize, and the Welcome to Marwen Prize for most anticipated episode.

We naturally rage against the snub of Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers, make promises of an eventual Cats episode, and highlight what makes this year’s Independent Spirit Awards so special. Apologies for the delay in the arrival of the episode!!

012 – An Unfinished Life

This week’s episode takes you back to September 2005, when the exit of the Weinsteins from Miramax resulted in a fire sale of delayed releases finally arriving in theatres to the most modest of fanfares. Least trumpeted of all was An Unfinished Life, starring Robert Redford, Jennifer Lopez, and Morgan Freeman.

Here we have a film to fill your This Had Oscar Buzz bingo card: Lasse Hallström. An adaptation of a book about a grieving family. Scar makeup of debatable quality. A bear shows up. And of course, the oh-so-trustworthy source of test screening reactions from online message boards building up our hopes of a Camryn Manheim nomination.

What makes a life “unfinished”? As we discuss this week, it might just be having a name like Griff, living in the generalized American west, and (our favorite) winning an award we have never heard of before!
