280 – State and Main

Forgotten cinema, you ask? This week, we’re coming to you with 2000’s State and Main, a Hollywood satire and ensemble comedy from lauded playwright David Mamet. A farce about a film production wreaking havoc on small town America, the film featured a very Mametian cast of Alec Baldwin and William H. Macy along with of-the-moment stars on the rise like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Julia Stiles. An ensemble win from the National Board of Review helped coast the film through the season, but it managed little other award mentions despite strong reviews.

This episode, we talk about David Mamet’s high (but waning) regard in the American theatre in contrast to his more under-the-radar film reputation. 196 – Notting Hill (EW Summer Movie Preview – Listeners’ Choice)

Whoopsie daisies, we have come to the close of our May miniseries taking a deep focus look back at Entertainment Weekly’s seasonal movie preview issues. And the closer was chosen by you, listeners! For your Listeners’ Choice, you have selected the Summer Movie Preview for Notting Hill. The film famously went head-to-head with grand behemoth Star Wars: Episode One – The Phantom Menace and still emerged victorious at the box office, thanks in part to Julia Roberts’ reemergent romcom power and the charms of Hugh Grant back in bumbling mop-haired mode. Notting Hill stars both respectively as the most famous actress in the world and a modest travel bookstore owner who fall in love against the odds, and it comes with all of the signatures of the combined powers of director Roger Michell and screenwriter Richard Curtis.

This episode, we look back at the oft-revisited 1999 movie year and unpack why it remains so fascinating to talk about. We also discuss Roberts’ double-header of romcom hits that summer with Runaway Bride, Pulp Fiction’s influence on films like Go, and South Park’s movie mission to wage war with the MPAA.

160 – Elizabethtown (with Phil Iscove)

Joining us this week is Podcast Like It’s 1999′s Phil Iscove to finally unpack a foundational This Had Oscar Buzz text. After winning an Oscar for Almost Famous and delivering a financially succesful (if extremely divisive) hit in Vanilla Sky, Cameron Crowe decided to return to his roots with Elizabethtown. Starring Orlando Bloom as a young shoe designer struggling to cope with professional ruin and the sudden death of his father, he meets a buoyant flight attendant played by Kirsten Dunst who brings him back to to himself. Crowded with song cues, bizarre character beats, and notes of whimsy that struggle to stick the landing, the film received a disastrous critical response at the Venice and Toronto film festivals, leading Crowe back into the editing room before release and Oscar to immediately count this one out.

Still a film that has a sizable fanbase of defenders of its earnest vibes, Elizabethtown is remembered today as the beginning of the end for Crowe and birthing the phrase Manic Pixie Dream Girl (as penned by Nathan Rabin). This episode, we dive into all that works and doesn’t for us in Crowe’s sentimental screwball movie, its infamous casting struggles with the biggest young acting names of the time, and the ups and recent downs of Crowe’s career.

148 – Concussion

Finally, we are telling the truth! In 2015, Will Smith took on another biopic with Concussion as Dr. Bennett Omalu, the forensic pathologist whose research on chronic traumatic encephalopathy experienced by football players found opposition with the NFL. After premiering at AFI Fest, the film received middling reviews and opened on Christmas Day only to be gobbled up by the storm that was The Force Awakens, resulting in one of Smith’s paltriest openings.

Will Smith’s strong performance landed him a Golden Globe nomination, but missed out of the Oscar lineup on nomination day, becoming one of the most cited performances in Oscar So White conversation. This episode, we discuss whether or the film goes easy on the NFL and their attempts to silence Dr. Omalu, and how it takes on toxic masculinity in football culture at large. We also look at the abysmal 2015 Best Actor race, how this film showed up in the Sony hack, and how Albert Brooks can sell a crass line about his anatomy.

113 – Running With Scissors

Annette Bening remains one of our most beloved actresses without an Oscar, and one of the most notorious (assumed) second place finalists after losing to Hilary Swank twice. This week, we’re looking at her turn as a mentally ill poet and mother in 2006′s Running With Scissors, adapted from the famously outrageous memoir by Augusten Burroughs. Bening received a Golden Globe nomination, but a stacked Best Actress year combined with the film’s poor reception with critics and audiences left her work as an afterthought come nomination morning.

The film was big screen debut of none other than television legend Ryan Murphy. This episode, we unpack the Murphy ethos, from his impact on the television landscape to the mixed reception to some of his work. We also discuss the film’s off-balance mix of comedy and tragedy, Gwyneth Paltrow in Bo Derek braids, and Bening as one of the most iconic smokers in cinema.

013 – It’s Complicated

Close your eyes. Picture the movie about kitchens you’ve always wanted. Now open them. Is Alec Baldwin blowing pot smoke into your face? That’s kind of what it’s like to experience the 2009 romantic comedy It’s Complicated, from celebrated (and beleaguered) director Nancy Meyers.

Since Oscar buzz follows Meryl Streep around like a heartsick ex-husband wherever she goes, this was a no-brainer of a selection for This Had Oscar Buzz.
